The Perfect Playlist

Today I ran my first 1/2 marathon relay at the Let’s Move Festival of Races! I am proud to say that my team was #22 out of 47 teams and my time for my 6 mile portion was 58:19.

Running and music go hand in hand for me, so I figured I would share the playlist that got me through each mile.

1. Cooler Than Me – Mike Posner
2. Let’s Get it Started – The Black Eyed Peas
3. I Love Rock ‘N Roll – Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
4. Fighter – Christina Aguilera
5. Survivor – Destiny’s Child
6. You Shook me all Night Long – AC/DC

7. Around the World – Daft Punk
8. Stronger – Kanye West
9. Meet Me Halfway – The Black Eyed Peas
10. The Way I Are – Timbaland
11. Dirrty – Christina Aguilera
12. Undo It – Carrie Underfoot
13. If You’re Going Through Hell – Rodney Atkins
14. S & M – Rihana
15. The Time – The Black Eyed Peas

Maybe one day I will complete a 1/2 marathon in its entirety … it is on my bucket list. In the meantime my next race is a 5k at Cedar Point on Father’s day!

Goodbye Gymboree . . . Hello Gymnastics!

Today has been a bitter-sweet day  . . . Brennen attended his last class at Gymboree Play & Music. :(

One part of me is sad to see that chapter in his life come to a close, but another part of me is happy for the opportunities that await him in gymnastics.

Brennen started going to Gymboree just before he turned 2. It was our attempt to coax him out of his shell and help him become more comfortable in unfamiliar situations.

The first class we attended was a little challenging. Brennen would not let me put him down. He clung to me for dear life for the entire 45 minutes! I have to admit that his reaction wasn’t much of a surprise, Andrew & I had already started to avoid taking Brennen to unfamiliar places because it was just too difficult. He would become visibly distraught, clinging to us, hiding his face in our shoulder and even crying at times. However, I was determined to continue with the classes to see if they would help him conquer his timidness.

As time went on Brennen became more and more comfortable. He eventually no longer needed me to hold him and he truly started to enjoy class! In fact, he would get so excited when we pulled into the Gymboree parking lot that he would say, “Play, Momma, play?!?!”  After walking in the door he would say “Hi, teacher!” and greet all of his friends and their parents.

His new-found confidence in himself and comfort level in new situations transferred to all areas of his life, enabling us to take him anywhere with ease! In fact, people often comment on how friendly he is and I can’t help but beam with pride at how far he has come!

Now that Brennen is 3, the classes Gymboree offers for his age group are very limited. Because of that and Brennen’s natural inclination for gymnastics (he does a stellar somersault and has incredible strength for someone his size) we have decided to give gymnastics a try.

So as I start to get misty eyed, THANK YOU Gymboree teachers, parents & kids. The impact you have had on Brennen’s life and ours is unmeasurable and we will treasure the memories forever!

Potty Training Boot Camp

We have been potty training Brennen on and off since he turned 2 years old. If you have read the about me section of my blog, you already know that he is 3! And I am sad to report that he is still not potty trained. :(

We have tried every reward system we can think of - M & M’s, marshmallows, stickers etc.

We have tried using a Dora the Explorer potty chart – every kid loves Dora, right?  Each time Brennen successfully used the potty we helped him put a sticker on the chart. After 4 days of using it, Brennen calmly walked over to the chart, took it off the fridge, crumpled it up and threw it on the floor. I think that was a sign …

We have tried the 3-day potty training method with the Scotty Potty doll. Brennen was intrigued by Scotty’s anatomically correct parts and enjoyed teaching Scotty to use the potty. However, it didn’t result in Brennen using the potty. Scotty has since been retired from his potty training duties and now resides on Brennen’s bed amongst his stuffed animals.

Most recently I came up with the brilliant idea of finding Barney underwear for Brennen. Brennen LOVES Barney! He sings and dances with Barney, why not pee and poop with Barney?!?! Evidently Barney underwear doesn’t exist . . . but I finally found 2 brand new un-opened packages on eBay. (I love eBay!) When the package finally arrived, Brennen opened it and started jumping up and down excitedly screaming, “Barney!!!” This lasted untill he discovered it was Barney underwear and then he wanted nothing to do with them. In fact, one day after Brennen actually used the potty I told him that he needed to start using his Barney underwear. After screaming for a pull-up and finally realizing I was not going to give in he just went ahead and put his pants on with nothing on underneath. He is always one step ahead of me . . .

At this point in the potty training process, I am beginning to think that the only way he is ever going to be potty trained is if I send him to some sort of potty training boot camp. I envision it to be staffed with highly trained potty training professionals who would return Brennen to us transformed into a lean, mean, peeing and pooping on the potty machine. Well, it doesn’t hurt to wish, right? ;)

TVs, Smartphones and Laptops – Oh My!

I have a love / hate relationship with electronic devices. I love them because they make my life easier, I hate them because my family is obsessed with them.

Take our recent trip to Ohio, for example. Before we even got on the expressway, our in-car TV decided to stop working. Brennen’s reaction? “I want TV!!!!!” Followed by kicking my seat and throwing things. Luckily we were able to subdue him by playing YouTube videos of Barney on our phones.

Once we got checked into the hotel, Brennen immediately turned on the TV and said, “Oso, please.” Try explaining to a 3 year old why the TV at the hotel doesn’t have a DVR filled with his favorite shows. The night ended with Brennen watching Barney on our laptop via Netflix and Andrew playing golf on his phone.(A game that Brennen accidentally purchased earlier in the day).

The next day while visiting family, Andrew and Brennen got a glimpse of an electronic device we have yet to add to our arsenal … the IPad. It doesn’t take a crystal ball to determine the IPad is in our future.*SIGH*

Back at the hotel, Andrew was glued to Angry Birds, Brennen was glued to Netflix and I was left wishing all those gadgets would disappear.

However, I have to admit that the car ride home was much more relaxing with a working TV!

To Blog or Not to Blog?

That is the question I have been mulling over for the last couple of weeks after getting my first glimpse into the blogging world thru my friend’s blog.

Writing a blog seemed like a logical step for me to take, as I currently keep a journal for my son, Brennen. The added bonus of a blog is that Brennen won’t have to decipher my atrocious handwriting!

However, I was hesitant to start a blog because of its transparency. Let’s face it, I really haven’t written anything for others to critique since college. It’s been a long time since I have had to think of sentence structure and punctuation, let alone an audience. Did I really want to open myself up in that way?

After much deliberation and finally finding an available url (that’s another blog entry in itself), I have decided to venture into the blogging world. Please be gentle on me. :)
