We have been potty training Brennen on and off since he turned 2 years old. If you have read the about me section of my blog, you already know that he is 3! And I am sad to report that he is still not potty trained.
We have tried every reward system we can think of – M & M’s, marshmallows, stickers etc.
We have tried using a Dora the Explorer potty chart – every kid loves Dora, right? Each time Brennen successfully used the potty we helped him put a sticker on the chart. After 4 days of using it, Brennen calmly walked over to the chart, took it off the fridge, crumpled it up and threw it on the floor. I think that was a sign …
We have tried the 3-day potty training method with the Scotty Potty doll. Brennen was intrigued by Scotty’s anatomically correct parts and enjoyed teaching Scotty to use the potty. However, it didn’t result in Brennen using the potty. Scotty has since been retired from his potty training duties and now resides on Brennen’s bed amongst his stuffed animals.
Most recently I came up with the brilliant idea of finding Barney underwear for Brennen. Brennen LOVES Barney! He sings and dances with Barney, why not pee and poop with Barney?!?! Evidently Barney underwear doesn’t exist . . . but I finally found 2 brand new un-opened packages on eBay. (I love eBay!) When the package finally arrived, Brennen opened it and started jumping up and down excitedly screaming, “Barney!!!” This lasted untill he discovered it was Barney underwear and then he wanted nothing to do with them. In fact, one day after Brennen actually used the potty I told him that he needed to start using his Barney underwear. After screaming for a pull-up and finally realizing I was not going to give in he just went ahead and put his pants on with nothing on underneath. He is always one step ahead of me . . .
At this point in the potty training process, I am beginning to think that the only way he is ever going to be potty trained is if I send him to some sort of potty training boot camp. I envision it to be staffed with highly trained potty training professionals who would return Brennen to us transformed into a lean, mean, peeing and pooping on the potty machine. Well, it doesn’t hurt to wish, right? 😉
