Let me preface this post by saying, I am all for girl power. After all, I am a girl. And I think it is very important for girls of all ages to know that they can do anything they want to do and they should never let anyone convince them otherwise.
I am also very aware that some people still believe that males and females are not equal. I have heard inappropriate comments from male runners at races about female competitors. I take great pride in proving those guys wrong by zooming right by them on the race course. The look on their faces is priceless.
As much as I am for girl power, I am not okay with girl power resulting in boy bashing.
Not sure what I am talking about? Take a look at this shirt.
Appalling isn’t it? And I am sad to say that I have seen shirts with countless other boy bashing phrases on girls ranging from toddler aged to teenagers. It won’t be long before my son starts to read. What do I say to him when he sees those shirts? Am I supposed to tell him that they are just meant to be funny? I certainly do not find them funny and I am sure he will not either.
Why can’t we empower both genders equally without putting the other one down? Don’t we want our daughters AND our sons to grow up to be happy and successful people who are contributing positively to society?
I would love for you to weigh in on this one. Do you agree with me on this? Why or why not?
