Rock CF Rivers Race Recap

This past Sunday I ran my first race of the year! And it was my first race since Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas. (Note to self: Don’t let there be so much time in between races. Racing is awesome!)

I ran the Rock CF Rivers 5k last year and loved it! No only is it a very organized and scenic race but it also benefits a cause very close to my heart, Cystic Fibrosis. I am fortunate that my son is just a carrier of the disease but he had to undergo lots of testing for us to get that diagnosis and I learned a lot about the disease in the process. If you would like to learn a little bit about Cystic Fibrosis for yourself, click here.

When I originally signed up for the race, I had signed up for the half marathon relay. However, a few days before race day my relay partner informed me that he would not be able to run. At that point I figured I had two options. I could either change to the 5k or change to the full half marathon. Thanks to the encouragement of all my friends, I decided to run the half. The Monday before the race I had ran 9 miles in 90 mins and prior to running RnRLV my longest run was 9 miles so I knew it was do-able.

The night before the race I laid out all my running gear and prepared to go to bed early!

My shirt and shoes match! Go me!

However, I was super excited about the race so I tossed and turned and probably only got a few solid hours of sleep before my alarm went off at 4am. Sleep or no sleep, it was race day so that alone motivated me to get out of bed and get going! I got dressed and ate some cereal before I headed out for my hour drive to Grosse Ile.

I got to the bus pick up area around 6am despite passing my exit on the expressway and having to loop around to get back on track. Packet pick up was easy peasy which left me with plenty of time to relax and mentally prepare for the race. I hate being rushed before the start of the race so this was a perfect scenario for me. Just before 7am I went to the bathroom for the last time and headed over to the start line to stretch and look for Megan from Watch MeGo Run . She was super nice and super speedy!

I tried not to put too many expectations on myself for this race since it was an unplanned half marathon and technically I needed to approach it as a training run for the Tough Mudder. But I will be honest, I had a super secret goal of finishing in 2:10 based on how well I had been running lately.

The first five miles of the race went a little like this in my head. “I’m running too fast, now I’m running too slow, I’m starving!” Yep, for a full 5 miles this is what I struggled with. I rarely do this. Once the race starts I usually get into a zone and just run. Not sure why it didn’t happen this time . . . maybe it was because of my super secret goal. At mile five I finally said to myself, “Why are you doing this to yourself, just effing run.” And it worked! I got into my happy zone and did what I love to do . . . I ran!

Miles 5-13.1 were super enjoyable for me. I enjoyed the scenery, my fellow runners and the feeling of being strong! At one point in the race I ran by a girl I had met while standing in the bathroom line. We bonded over wearing the same shoes and she had told me it was her first half. I was excited to see her and I gave her some words of encouragement as I ran by. It was a nice feeling to not be the newbie half marathoner anymore. :) The relay exchange was just shy of the 8 mile mark and since I was wearing a relay bib all of the volunteers really wanted me to come off the course. I kept shouting “No, it’s ok. I switched to the half.” After saying that a few times the runner next to me said “I want to switch to the relay.” That made me chuckle a little. Towards the end of the race I passed a pregnant runner who deserves some props. Well, let’s face it. ALL pregnant runners deserve some props. She was rocking that race and I told her I thought she was doing awesome!

It should be noted that this race had LOTS of water stations and many had GU and Powerade as well. However, I carry all of my own stuff with me but I ended up running out of water and I grabbed a cup of water at the last aid station. Hence the reason my race pics look like this. Just one of the many reasons I carry my own water, I can’t drink out of those little cups!

The finish line of the race is on a high school track. As I ran onto the track there were a couple of guy runners next to me who were encouraging the other to sprint to the finish. Which meant they were passing me. Which in turn made me say “Um, hell no!” I had plenty left in me to sprint as well and I gave the guys a run for their money. And yes, I “chicked” them.

I finished with a respectable time of 2:11:43 (that was my offiicial chip time.) It wasn’t a 2:10 but close enough! And it was considerably less than my 2:36:45 that I did at RnRLV. Probably the greatest part of the race was how I felt AFTERWARDS! I didn’t feel like death. I felt GOOD! I am a much stronger runner than I was in December and realizing that makes all my training that much more worth it! Tough Mudder here I come!!!

My new medal!

Did you race this past weekend too? I want to hear about it!

Kreativ Blogger Award or Another Round of 7 Random Things

One of my favorite bloggers is Jenny from The Running Thriver. If you think I am a fitness enthusiast, you should read about some of the workouts she does. She is hard core! And not only that, but she is a genuine and compassionate person. Go check out her blog!

Recently she tagged me in her Kreativ Blogger Award post, which means I get to share another round of 7 random things about me! In keeping with the tradition of me not following the rules in regards to these types of posts, I asked people on Facebook and Twitter what they would like to know about me and I am going to answer those questions now!

1. Toilet paper . . . . . over the roller or under?

Over of course! Is there any other way??? If I visit your house and you have the toilet paper on wrong, I may even change it just to help you out!

How could you do the hotel fold if your tp was flipped the wrong way???

2. Would you rather be one of the best athletes ever but always injured or an average athlete but always healthy?

I am going to go with an average athlete but always healthy. Being an injured athlete is never fun. Running and working out keeps me sane and when I am injured my time is spent longing to get back into the swing of things. I am okay with being an average athlete. Although, it would be fun to play the part of an elite athlete for a day or two.

I would love to be one of these girls just for one race!

3. What’s your height?

5 feet 1.5 inches. And yes the 1/2 inch matters. What I don’t have in height I make up for with fiesty-ness and high heels. ;)

4. Red, sangria or white?

I like all three but I prefer a frozen beverage with a little umbrella in it! And it wouldn’t hurt if I was drinking that beverage while lounging on a sandy beach!

The drink on the right is my fav! It is a TGI Fridays strawberry shortcake!

5. Most embarrassing non-race moment?

This one is hard. For some reason, nothing quickly comes to mind. Although I can assure you I have many. The only recent ones that come to mind pertain to things that my son does that embarrasses me. Throwing temper tantrums in public so everyone stares at us or when he gets mad at people in the grocery store that don’t respond when he says hello. I am also guilty of embarrassing other people as my mouth can sometimes get me into trouble. I have no problem saying something to a complete stranger if I feel that person needs to be knocked down a peg or two.

6. When you were younger what did you want to be when you grew up and why?

When I was in High School I really wanted to be a lawyer. I am a very thorough and analytical person. I also enjoy a friendly debate.

7.  This question is for you to fill in! What do you want to know about me? Leave a comment below and I will answer your burning question! ;)

My Bad Running Habit

I seriously need one of these!

Lately I have been getting a lot of flack from some of my friends regarding my running habits. And no, not that I run too much, although I have certainly been told that a time or two (which is completely off base). But instead it is about something that I DON’T do.

I am going to describe a typical run day for me and I want to see if you can spot what they are upset about.

I generally squeeze in my runs after work and before picking up my son from school or at other times during the week when I don’t have my son. If it is a work day I will head home, snack on a granola bar, put my run gear on, stretch and head out the door to attack whatever miles my training plan calls for that day. Once I get back from my run I log my workout on DailyMile, stretch and refuel.

Were you able to figure out what bothers my friends?

In case you couldn’t figure it out, I will tell you. My friends don’t like that no one knows when I am going running, where I am going running or how far I am going. In retrospect that makes perfect sense to me, but I just never put much thought into it before. I figure I have ID on and I run all the time so what is there to think about. But now that I live alone (my son doesn’t really count in this case) if something were to happen to me no one would really realize it until much later and no one would know where to look for me at.

Now that I realize the lax in my judgement, I have a new routine. I text a friend just before I leave for my run and I tell her approximately how long I will be gone. She also knows my normal running route. When I get back from my run I text her so she knows all is well. I still forget to text her on occasion as I haven’t been doing it long enough for it to have become a habit but I am definitely trying to make it a priority.

Are you guilty of this bad running habit? What do you do to make your runs and workouts safer?

Fab Find Friday: Jewelry Displays

I definitely consider myself to be an organized person. In fact, clutter makes me feel overwhelmed and a drives me a little crazy. With that being said, I am a little sad to admit that my jewelry box is a bit of a disaster. I spend way too much time untangling necklaces and looking for earrings that match.

From the outside, it seems nice enough.

But on the inside it is a chaotic mess.

In my defense, I think I just do not have the right “tools” to keep all my accessories organized properly. Which is why I have my eye on these!

Too cute, right?

Ahhhh, tangle free necklaces!

Both of these items come from a shop on Etsy called Tammnoony  Jewelry Displays. The items are all handmade and can even be custom designed! I just love the look of them!

I dream of the day that I can have all my jewelry organized and displayed properly (even if most of my jewelry is just the costume variety).

How do you keep your jewelry organized? And what items do you day-dream about finally get organized?

Updated Race Schedule

I think my Wordless Wednesday post was pretty easy to figure out last week.

If you guessed that I added another race to my race schedule, you are correct! You may remember that I did the Dirty Dog Dash in Hell last year. This year I will not be in Hell, but I will definitely be enjoying 3 fun filled miles of mud and obstacles! Here is the course from last year. I am guessing it will be pretty similar this year and I am pretty excited to tackle this course in June!

In addition to the Dirty Dog Dash, I have also signed up to do the Run Like A Mother 5k. I am super excited about this race for two reasons! The first is that it will be my running friend’s first race EVER! I am super stoked that I get to pace her through her first race. And the second reason I am excited is because the apartment complex I live in is the sponsor of the race and the race begins right outside my front door! How cool is that?!?!? After the race, my apartment complex holds a barbecue for all the runners and their families in celebration of Mother’s Day. Did I pick an awesome place to live or what???

I am still waiting on pins and needles for the lottery to open up for the Nike Women’s Marathon. I really really really really want to get into that race. And no, it’s not just because I want a fireman in a tuxedo to give me a Tiffany’s finishers necklace. No  . . .. who needs any of that??? LOL

So as of now, this is what my race schedule looks like for 2012.

3/25 – Rock CF Rivers Half Marathon Relay

4/14 – Tough Mudder

5/12 – Run Like A Mother 5k

6/9 – Dirty Dog Dash

7/29 – Warrior Dash

I still need to sign up for a “normal” 5k so I can rock that PR goal that I set for myself this year!!!

Have you added any new races to your race schedule for 2012? I want to hear about them!

Fab Find Friday: Time for a new Swimsuit!

As I mentioned in my Fit March post, swimsuits are in every store right now! So you know what that means . . . it is time for the dreaded swimsuit shopping. I don’t care what size or shape of a person you are, swimsuit shopping is torturous for everyone! That is why I do mine online! That and it’s easy to look at a bunch of swimsuits in a short amount of time.

So here are the two that I am considering.

The Rio Twist Bandeau Top and Cheeky Hipkini Bottom in shimmer very fuchsia from Victoria’s Secret.

And the Forever Sexy Bandeau Top with Fold-over Low Rise Bottom in blue paisley also from Victoria’s Secret.

I showed these to a couple of friends of mine because I am not sure if I can get away with wearing either of these swimsuits since I don’t look like a Victoria’s Secret supermodel and one of them replied, “You don’t? We have always thought that you do!” Which just reinforced why I love those two girls SO much! ;) But in all seriousness, I am fit but I am not a Victoria’s Secret supermodel. However, thanks to all of the hard work I do, I am probably in the best shape I have ever been in. So . . . . maybe I will take a chance and show it off a little this Summer.

Have you started your swimsuit shopping yet? I want to see what you will be sporting at the beach this year!

Fit March

With February behind us, that means the Fab Ab February Challenge is also!

I am still having a hard time believing that I mastered a 2 minute plank!!!  It is super hard to do and I am pretty darn proud of myself for doing it I think I am going to do planks on a regular basis so I don’t lose the ability to hold it for 2 minutes. You know what they say, use it or lose it. ;) (The longest one I have held was 2:32, when I challenged ViewSPORT to a plank off. I lost by the way, as he clocked in a plank over 3 minutes!!! )

Now just because February is over, that doesn’t mean that we should place fitness on the back burner. No way! Besides, swimsuit season is right around the corner! Don’t believe me? Every retail store is already selling swimsuits! With that in mind it is time for our March challenge!

Looks like fun, right? It’s up to you if you want to do this every day, every other day, a few times a week or whatever you come up with. That’s the best thing about exercise, you can customize it to make it work for you. I am going to try to do it a couple of times a week as right now I am in full training mode for the Tough Mudder and I need to stay on track with that. (Which reminds me . . . . I still need donations for my Wounded Warrior Project fundraiser. Click here and help a girl out!)

If you decide to join in on the challenge and you are on Twitter, use the hashtag #FitMarch so I can follow your progress. If you are not on Twitter feel free to let me know how the challenge is going by posting a comment on my Facebook page.

In the meantime, I want to know what goals you have for the month of March. I can’t wait to hear to hear about your fitness and non-fitness goals!!!

Fab Find Friday: Every Girl Needs a Good Purse . . . Or Five!

Recently I started thinking about how a majority of my blog posts are all running or fitness related minus the occasional post about my son or parenting. Now I certainly don’t have any problem with this realization but I thought perhaps it would be fun to do something a little different for a change. Change is good, right??? Besides, believe it or not I AM interested in other things besides working out and gushing about my son! It’s true!!!

Like most women, I enjoy shopping! Thankfully I tend to do more window shopping than actual purchasing (I do have a budget) but that doesn’t deter me from checking things out both online and in the stores. And every now and then I find something that is worth spending my hard earned money on! I will be sharing these finds with you on my new blog series called Fab Find Friday (you all probably know by now that I love having at least one series on my blog at all times!! lol) I hope you will all enjoy reading it as much as I am going to enjoy writing it!

So here is today’s Fab Find!

Photo from QVC

It is a Kathy Van Zeeland purse!

I am not a brand whore by any means. I am just as happy shopping at Kohl’s as I am shopping at Express. However, ever since I found my first KVZ purse over 2 years ago, I have really been drawn to her line. Her handbags and purses just seem like me! They are sophisticated but with a little bit of bling! AND the best part about KVZ purses is that you can own a designer handbag without the designer price tag as it is very common to find her line at TJ Maxx.

I found this particular purse on QVC and no, I am not your typical QVC shopper. In fact, this was my first purchase from QVC ever! I was itching for a new purse and I couldn’t find anything that I liked in the stores, so I turned to the internet and googled KZV purses and discovered that QVC sells a ton of them! I was a little hesitant about ordering a purse online because I am pretty picky about my purse. It has to be a certain size, have an easily accessible spot for my phone and lots of little pockets to put all the little things I carry around. But I fell in love with this purse and took a chance. Luckily I loved it as much in person as I did online. I keeps everything organized and it looks great. Plus it is lined with an awesome purple fabric that gives it a pop of color that you wouldn’t expect! I love little details like that.

Photo from QVC

Head over to QVC to check out this KVZ purse and many more.  I promise her line will not disappoint you. Every woman deserves a good purse, right?
