Down & Dirty Mud Run Recap

This past Sunday I ran the Down & Dirty Mud Run 10k! A big thanks to Renewal by Andersen of Detroit for sponsoring me in this race! Much appreciated! (All Detroit area runners should like them on Facebook for a chance to win a free race entry. They give them away ALL the time.)

The start time of the race was 7:30am which meant a 4am wake up time for me! That’s early, even for me!

The race was at Kensington Metro Park which puts the park near me to shame. Oh how I wish I lived closer to that park! It is a mecca of trail running, bike paths and hills! More on the hills later!

When I got to the park there was a bit of confusion over where the race actually was. I am not sure if it was due to lack of signage or because it was dark out or both. Either way myself and many other runners spent some time walking in the opposite direction of the race area. Once I got redirected towards the race area, I found it without any trouble. Packet pick up was a breeze. And shortly after I picked up my packet, I headed to the Renewal by Andersen tent to get my awesome race shirt. There were 3 other runners sponsored at this race in addition to myself. Did I mention how awesome Renewal by Andersen is? Seriously!

This shirt got lots of compliments!

While waiting for the pre-race festivities to get underway I spotted these guys.

I knew one of the obstacles was push-ups so I was kinda excited about the possibility of a drill sargeant ordering some push-ups out of me. I’m weird, I know.

Before the race started there was a pull-up contest. The winner of the woman’s division did 17 and the winner of the male division did 27, I believe. That’s pretty awesome, in my opinion, as I can’t even do 1! Which reminds me, I should work on that.

After the pull-up contest it was time to line up at the start line. This was very different from any mud run I have ever done before, as you lined up in a corral based upon your projected pace per mile. Every other mud run I have done had different waves or heats. I was a little nervous about how the corral idea would work but this race was much smaller than other mud runs and thus it worked out just fine. I was in the 10 min pace corral, which meant that I had a little waiting time before I actually started. The first corral to go was military & service personnel, then the 8 min corral, then the 9 min corral and then mine. In between each corral was a 4 minute gap. While I waited I chatted with some of the runners about the race and other mud runs. I got a lot of surprised looks when I disclosed that I ran a Tough Mudder. A little un-intended intimidation can be a good thing in a race. ;)

Since I lined up at the front of my corral, once my corral reached the start line, I was in the very front. This was a first for me, I don’t normally line up at the very front of the pack. But I stood my ground and figured I would hold my own as long as I could. Once the gun went off, I took off and tried to keep pace with the others who started up front. I quickly realized I wouldn’t be able to maintain the pace that they were keeping for the entire race so I backed off and ran my race to prevent from running out of steam halfway through. The course was hilly from the get go and was a good indicator of how the entire course was going to be. Luckily I have been hill training for the Nike Women’s Half Marathon on the treadmill so that was in my favor.

The first 4 miles of the race felt blah to me. I just wasn’t feeling right, I wasn’t running 100% and if felt like more work than it should have. I kept on having to remind myself that I was a Tough Mudder. Lol Whatever mantra gets you through right? After mile 4 everything fell into place and I felt like I had my running mojo back.

Here are the obstacles that I tackled along the course.

1. Ladder Wall - A series of 8 foot tall walls that look just like ladders. Thanks to the ladder rungs they were easy to get over.

2. Low Crawl – A cargo net laid close to the ground that you crawl under. I have done this type of obstacle before and being small works to my advantage.

3. Balance Beams – I suck at balancing but I made it all the way across the beams without any help and without falling.

4. Monkey Cross – This was tough for me since I am short! There were straps to walk on with large gaps in between. The key to getting across was using the ropes at the top to steady yourself. The problem was I couldn’t reach the ropes by myself. So I would have to wait for someone else to grab the same rope that I needed which brought it down far enough for me to reach it.

5. 20 Push Ups – Doing 50 push-ups every other day or so came in handy here! I was able to make up some of the time that I lost at the previous obstacle and I even passed a few people who had started their push-ups before I got there!

6. Marine Hurdles – A series of 5 feet tall hurdles. I wasn’t graceful getting over them, but I did it!

7. Tires – There were a ton of tires to run through. Fun!

8. Five Foot Walls – These were easier to get over than the Marine Hurdles. I guess because there was something to put my feet against.

9. Low Walls – These were fun and easy as they are only about 4 feet tall.

10. Sandbag Carry – I was excited about this obstacle as I hadn’t done anything like it before. I know, I get excited about weird stuff. I carried a 20 lb sand bag through the designated area without a problem.

11. Inflatable – I LOVED this! It was basically a 20 foot inflatable slide. Before you could get to the fun part of sliding down it, you first had to climb up a cargo net.

12. Cargo Climb – Another cargo net, but smaller than the previous.

13. Water Crossing – This was refreshing walk in water after being all hot and sweaty.

14. Mud Pit – The first mud that we encountered on the course. You had to army crawl through the mud to stay under the string of flags.

15. Tunnels – A big cloth tunnel to crawl through.

16. High Wall – An 8 foot wall with climbing holds. You could elect to do a smaller version of the wall so of course I tackled the big one. Made me want to do rock climbing for real!

17. Slippery Mountain - This was hard. You had to crawl on your knees up and over a a sloped wall using a rope to help you get over it. Did I mention it was slippery?

18. Mud Pit #2 – No mud run is complete without a final mud pit for spectators to enjoy!

Me coming out of the mud pit!

As I mentioned before the race had a ton of hills! It was like I was getting my long run and hill work in all in one run! I ran up most hills but did walk a portion of a few of them. Right before the inflatable obstacle there was a giant hill that seemed to go straight up with no end in sight. I talk to myself (and other runners) a lot when I run. Sometimes out loud and sometimes in my head. I’m not sure which it was this time but I remember saying “I am going to run up this sob if it kills me. Oh and I swear a lot when I run too. Nobody and I mean NOBODY was running up the hill. So ran it I did and I got tons of encouragement as I passed people on the way up. Which also meant that there was no way I was going to walk any of it. I think I even shouted out something about how I love hills! Who am I? lol

At the end of the race there was plenty of water and food to refuel. I was grateful for the refreshing orange slices which tasted heavenly after being hot and muddy. Usually there are only bananas at the end of races and I am the only runner who doesn’t like bananas. Once I hosed myself off, I retrieved my bag from baggage check and made my way to claim my free grub. Every racer got a hamburger, chips and pop! That is a plus!

Probably one of the highlights of the day was when another runner came over to me and said “Nice run! I tried to keep pace with you but couldn’t keep up.” Thank you runner dude. That made my day. Especially since I didn’t find my groove until the 4 mile mark.

My official race time turned out to be 1:10:27, not too shabby. I placed 14th out of 48 in my age group and I was 207th out of the 537 total runners.

As much fun as I had at this race, it was a little bittersweet. I think this is my last mud run of the year as next month I have a “normal” 5k and in October I have the Nike Women’s Half. Luckily, I already have several mud runs scheduled for next year, so that will give me something to look forward to! I may have a mud run addiction, can you tell? :)

Divorce & Dating

I used to be one of those people who would look at couples who were in the  midst of going through a divorce and frown upon their decision to start dating other people before their divorce was final. I used to think, “How can they date someone? They are not even divorced yet. They are STILL married!”

Funny what changes when your perspective changes.

Now I am one of those people who I once judged so harshly.

Entering the dating scene as a soon to be divorcee is a tricky thing. Not only do you have to deal with your own relationship hang-ups but you also have the added pressure of people on the outside passing along their judgement. Add in the normal ups and downs that accompany going through a divorce and the challenges of being a single parent to the mix and you can see why things could get complicated.

I certainly do not consider myself to be an expert on dating during a divorce but I have definitely learned a lot in the short amount of time that it has become part of my life.

Here is what I have learned.

 1. It is OKAY to start dating before you are officially divorced. There is a BIG difference between being emotionally divorced and legally divorced. Often times, one happens before the other as most states have a waiting period between when you file for divorce and when you actually are divorced. The waiting period is even longer when the divorcing couple has kids.

2. People are going to judge you. Going through a divorce makes you a prime target for scrutiny both positive and negative on everything that you do. So stay true to yourself and do what works best for you.

3. Be open and honest with anyone that you are considering dating about your situation. Initially I suspected that people would be hesitant to date someone who is technically still married, but that turned out not to be true at all.

4. Dating again is going to be weird and scary. The sooner you come to terms with that the better. With that being said, it can be lots of fun and reawaken a side of you that you haven’t seen in a while.

5. The dating pool is a lot more limited than it was when you were younger. But that doesn’t mean that you need to settle. Keep your standards and expectations high and when the time is right, the right person will come along.

Have you experienced the dating while going through a divorce situation? If so, what advice would you give to someone in that situation?

Why I am not a Stroller Warrior

I truly believe that all runners are strong. But out of all the different types of runners that exist the toughest runners, in my opinion, are stroller warriors. They are tougher than Tough Mudders, marathoners and even ultra runners. Stroller warriors are Moms and Dads who get their runs in by pushing their kids around in jogging strollers. I don’t care how great a jogging stroller is, it still takes a lot of extra effort to push it around not to mention push it around with the added weight and distraction of having a kid or two inside it!

I attempted to become a stroller warrior about a year ago and it only lasted for a couple of months. I bought myself a great jogging stroller (after extensive research) and thought it would be the solution to my lack of kid free running time. I quickly realized that Little B and I are not cut out for running together. Running is my me time and running with Little B in the stroller made me feel like I never got my me time. Instead of feeling recharged and refreshed after my run, I felt more stressed. I wasn’t able to totally zone out in my run because I needed to be available for Little B if he needed something. Not to mention Little B only tolerated runs that were a couple of miles. Anything more than that and he was just not happy. I even resorted to giving him my phone so he could watch his favorite shows but even that wouldn’t placate him long enough to get a real run in.

At first I felt guilty about not wanting to run with Little B. But I don’t anymore. It’s not that I don’t want to spend time with him, it’s just that I don’t want to run with him. I love him very much and there are a lot of things that I like to do with him but running isn’t one of them. When I run I am not a mom or any of the other roles that I play in my life. I am just me. And that’s the way I like it.

This is where the jogging stroller lives. Even the vacuum gets more action than it does!

How about you? Are you a stroller warrior? Or if you do not run, what is your me time away from your kid(s)?

The Facebook 300 Challenge

My blog’s Facebook page is getting ever so close to having 200 likes!!! I am flattered to have that many people willing to be subjected to my random thoughts and blog posts. ;)

As excited as I am about hitting the big 200, I am naturally thinking about how awesome it would be to hit 300! It’s no secret that I love a challenge and am constantly striving to improve upon the here and now. And besides, 300 is a great number. I mean who could forget this epic movie…

Ok, maybe that’s not the best example. But you can see how 300 could be a pretty fierce group of people. And I want my blog’s Facebook page to be fierce!

As a side note, did you know that there is a workout called the 300 workout that is designed to make you look like you stepped off of the set of the movie? It’s true. And it’s pretty bad ass. Check it out by clicking here.

I know what some of you are thinking. When I hit the magical 300 likes, I should do the 300 workout. But let’s be real. Did you actually go LOOK at the workout? Go look and then come back.

Ok. Now that you actually looked at it, I think we both can agree that I am not quite at the 300 workout level. However, when I do hit the 300 mark on my blog’s Facebook page I will do my own 300 workout. I will do 100 push-ups, 100 crunches and 100 squats. All in one day!

So what are you waiting for? Share my page with your family and friends. The quicker I get to 300 likes, the quicker you can inflict pain happiness upon me!

Mini-Mudder Course

Did you see my Wordless Wednesday post from yesterday? If so, you may have noticed that I have TWO Tough Mudders scheduled for next year. If you didn’t notice, I completely understand since Little B’s cuteness may have distracted you from the other two pics on the post. ;)   Ever since I did my first Tough Mudder, I have been itching to sign up for another one. Once you get a taste of a Tough Mudder you will want to come back for more! I guarantee it!

In true Tough Mudder spirit I decked Little B out in his very own Tough Mudder apparel and set up an indoor (no mud allowed) Mini-Mudder course for him to tackle. We both had a blast with it! Here is what we came up with!

1. Mat Mayhem –  Somersault your way across the mat without falling into the “muddy” abyss on either side!

2.  Frog Jumps – Make like a frog and jump over the logs!

3. Crazy Cycle - Hop on your Mini-Mudder approved trike and high tail it to the next obstacle!

4. Leap of Faith - One small hop for a Toddler but more peace of mind for the Mudder parent.

(No need to encourage jumping off of high objects!)

5. Grab & Dash - Fill your basket to the top with mysterious objects and dispense them into the bag at the checkpoint.

6. Shoot for the Stars - Make 3 shots into the basket to stop the race clock and become an official Mini-Mudder!

***All obstacles were completed by Little B whose qualifications include being a fun and fearless four-year old who happens to have a Tough Mudder for a Mom. It is highly recommended that all toddlers be evaluated for their readiness to complete such a strenuous course before attempting their first Mini-Mudder.***

Honk Away!

If you are a runner you have probably been honked at a time or two during one of your runs.

With that being said, it seems like people fall on either one side or the other on this issue. You either hate it or love it.

I love it! And here’s why.

1) It makes my good runs even better.

Last week I set out to see how fast I could run a 5k. (One of my goals for 2012 is to run a 5k race in 27 minutes or less.) On that day, I was making great time and I felt great too! It was one of those runs where everything just seemed to click! About halfway through my run two guys in a truck started honking at me. I couldn’t help but smile and be appreciative of the encouragement. It’s nice to have your hard work recognized, even if by strangers! And btw, I ran the 5k in 26:30! Woot! (Now to replicate that in a race!)

2) It makes my bad runs seem not as bad.

A couple of weeks ago I had a really bad run. I left for my 6 mile long run without… Click to read the rest of my post on Wild Things RUN Free

Liebster Blog Award: aka More Randomness About Me!

Jaliza who blogs over at Athlete in Me tagged me in her Liebster Blog award post! Thanks so much for the nomination!

The rules of the Liebster Blog Award are as follows:

Tag 11 blogs and link them to your post. Tell 11 random things about yourself. Answer the questions that the person who tagged you asks. Create 11 new questions for the people you tag.

Since I didn’t make the rules and neither did Jaliza, I don’t feel bad breaking them. I’m such a rebel, I know. ;) So instead of telling you 11 random things about me (I don’t want to overwhelm you with my craziness), I am going to split that in half and tell you 5.5 random things. I of course, will answer all 11 questions Jaliza asked of me. It would be rude not to. And I will ask 5.5 questions of 5 other bloggers (I don’t know anyone who is half a blogger)!

And to make things EVEN MORE interesting, my random facts are being brought to you by Mr. Sarcastic. That’s right, I am letting Mr. Sarcastic fill you in on me. Keep in mind that his blog nickname is Mr. Sarcastic for a reason!!! (I may regret this!)

1. I am a super organized neat freak. I would have organizers for my organizers, if that were possible. (True!)

2. I have a tattoo just far enough to the side that I can claim that it is not a tramp stamp. (It is SO NOT a tramp stamp!)

3. I am waaay kinkier that I let on. (No comment…)

4. I don’t drink my calories unless it it alcohol related. (True!)

5. I am a sucker for cheesy romantic gestures. (Very true! And I’m glad he realizes it!)

5.5 I like it in my….. (I’m sure he is talking about something running related here.)

Now on to the questions that Jaliza asked me!

1. What do you love most about blogging? This is an easy one! I love connecting with people who I probably never would have connected with if it wasn’t for my blog.

2. What are your hobbies except for blogging? Hmmm…blogging and running / working out take up most of my free time. Does dating Mr. Sarcastic count as a hobby?

3. What is your favorite blog that you read daily? Just ONE? This is REALLY hard. I read many blogs daily. I can’t bring myself to pick a favorite. Check out my blogroll for some of the blogs that I read.

4. What snack do you eat at the movies? I don’t go to the movies very often. But I watch a ton of movies while hanging out with Mr. Sarcastic. I usually eat ice cream, of course!

5. If you could travel back in time, what era would you choose and why? I would go back to the 1950′s, mostly for the music.

6. Iphone or Android? I have a Droid and HATE it! I gives me error messages all the time. I am hoping for an Iphone in the near future.

7. If you could pick a dream profession what would it be? If I could be a beach volleyball player / runner / blogger AND get paid for it…..that would be AWESOME!

8. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve even given / received? Someone special once told me that I needed to stop “over-thinking things.” And it turned out that he was very right!

9. What’s the best time to workout for you? I always run in the late afternoon. I already get up at a ridiculous hour for work, so morning workouts aren’t really an option for me.

10. A must have item on you at all times? (pick one!) Easy! My phone! Gotta stay connected!

11. Which country, other than you current residence, do you lost most? The only other country I have travelled to is Canada. But I would LOVE to travel to Greece!

The 5 blogs / bloggers I have chosen are all ones that I recently started following. They are:

A Gutsy Girl by Sarah

Bald Guy Running by Christian

Run More Awesome by Sarah Jo

Run Run Johnny by John B

She is on a Run by Kelley

And here are the 5.5 questions I would like them to answer!

1. What is the #1 race you have on your bucket list?

2. If you could only partake in one social media site, which one would it be and why?

3. What was your biggest rookie running mistake?

4. What are you most scared of?

5. Other than running, what workouts / sports do you like to do?

5.5 . What is your favorite…………..?

I am looking forward to reading all of their answers to my questions! Thanks again to Jaliza for nominating me for this award. And thanks to Mr. Sarcastic for sharing some random “facts” about me. If you want to join in on the fun, feel free to answer any of the questions or share some random factoids about yourself! I would love to read your responses!
