I truly believe that all runners are strong. But out of all the different types of runners that exist the toughest runners, in my opinion, are stroller warriors. They are tougher than Tough Mudders, marathoners and even ultra runners. Stroller warriors are Moms and Dads who get their runs in by pushing their kids around in jogging strollers. I don’t care how great a jogging stroller is, it still takes a lot of extra effort to push it around not to mention push it around with the added weight and distraction of having a kid or two inside it!
I attempted to become a stroller warrior about a year ago and it only lasted for a couple of months. I bought myself a great jogging stroller (after extensive research) and thought it would be the solution to my lack of kid free running time. I quickly realized that Little B and I are not cut out for running together. Running is my me time and running with Little B in the stroller made me feel like I never got my me time. Instead of feeling recharged and refreshed after my run, I felt more stressed. I wasn’t able to totally zone out in my run because I needed to be available for Little B if he needed something. Not to mention Little B only tolerated runs that were a couple of miles. Anything more than that and he was just not happy. I even resorted to giving him my phone so he could watch his favorite shows but even that wouldn’t placate him long enough to get a real run in.
At first I felt guilty about not wanting to run with Little B. But I don’t anymore. It’s not that I don’t want to spend time with him, it’s just that I don’t want to run with him. I love him very much and there are a lot of things that I like to do with him but running isn’t one of them. When I run I am not a mom or any of the other roles that I play in my life. I am just me. And that’s the way I like it.
How about you? Are you a stroller warrior? Or if you do not run, what is your me time away from your kid(s)?
