I used to be one of those people who would spend countless hours perfecting my playlists for races. I would select songs based on the distance of the race and ensure that they added up to the correct amount of time for each event. I would organize the songs based on when I thought I would need each song throughout the race and make sure I had the best possible song to start and end the race with.
As time has gone on I have gotten away from being such a slave to my playlist. For smaller races I don’t usually even make a special playlist anymore. I just put my iPod on shuffle and run to whatever comes on. I primarily only use my iPod for running so all of the songs are ones I would run or workout to anyways. For bigger distances, like my upcoming half marathon, I put together a special playlist but I don’t obsess or organize it. I just throw a bunch of songs together that I really like, make sure that they equal approximately the amount of time I will be on the course running and that is the extent of my playlist making. This method takes WAY less time then my previous obsessive playlist making and in all reality neither method makes me run or race any differently.
What is your method for making running / workout playlists? Or do you not listen to music at all? (Personally , I think that is crazy but I know a ton of people who prefer to be music free.)
