I am sure you have probably figured out by now that I am finally divorced. But in case you didn’t, let me tell you myself. I am divorced!
Words can not even describe the enormous relief I felt as I left the courtroom last month after my final hearing. The relief was due to two reasons. 1) I finally got legal closure on my marriage. 2) The stress of handling the divorce on my own without a lawyer would finally dissipate.
My ex and I had what is referred to as an uncontested divorce. We agreed on all aspects of the divorce and thus did not need lawyers to assist with the divorce process. This saved us a lot of money and the headache of having our personal lives dragged through the court system. However, this also meant that I was in charge of the divorce because I was the one the filed. That meant I was in charge of all of the paperwork, navigating the court system, scheduling our hearing etc. That responsibility weighed very heavily on me for six months. I didn’t want to make a mistake on the paperwork, the filing of the paperwork etc.
I definitely turned to friends and family that were able to offer advice and proofread the documents. I also purchased this book which was a life saver!
It detailed the process of an uncontested divorce from start to finish and I would have been lost without it. Not everything in the book was entirely accurate for my county but it was accurate enough for me to look knowledgeable and handle the divorce on my own.
At my divorce hearing the judge told me that she liked seeing people like myself who are able to get divorced without lawyers. As silly as it sounds, that compliment was the icing on the cake after a long six months.
So what’s next for me now that this chapter is closed? It’s hard to say but I do know that I am striving to live a full and happy life because life is too short for anything less than that.
