This past Saturday I ran my first race of 2013, the PoHo Hot Cocoa 8k!
This was my first time running this race so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Because of that and my need to pick up my packet on race day, I got to the race just over an hour before the start time. I ended up seeing my friend Mike while I was picking up my packet and I met some runners from a running club that I am in. I also
met saw Johnny from Run Run Johnny in the lines for the port a pottys.
Here are a few things of interest to note about race day. 1) The temperature was around 40 degrees. For Michigan, in January, that is AWESOME. 2) I haven’t been feeling that great and even thought about not running the race. 3) I decided to run because I figured I wouldn’t die and I really wanted my Nike Half-zip and to partake in all of the chocolate at the end of the race.
Going into the race I decided I would take it easy and run 10 minute miles……and then the gun went off. It is so hard not to get caught up in the excitement of the race! I ended up throwing my grand plan out the window and just running whatever felt good. The course was very scenic as we were by the water for the majority of the course. I saw some freighters and a coast guard boat! I love races that offer visual stimulation. Outside of looking at the other runners, of course. 😉
My official time was 44:38, which all things considered, I was pretty pumped about! I was 29th in my age group out of 89 and I was 348th out of 902 total 8k runners.
After I finished the race, I helped myself to some hot chocolate and enjoyed some food dipped in chocolate thanks to the chocolate fountain. I should have taken a picture of it all to share with you but I was too focused on enjoying it. I’ll be better about taking pictures at the next race, I promise.
This is definitely a race I would consider doing again next year, especially if they keep having the Nike Half-zips as the race shirts.
My next race is the Sandmine Challenge in February! Woot!
What did you do over the weekend?
