One of my 2013 running goals was to volunteer at a race and I did just that this past weekend!
My job at the race was to man fluid station #7. It was the last fluid station of the race and because of which every runner whether they did the 5k, 10k or 10 mile run all passed by my station! There were quite a few other people at my station as well including a Pom team and their parents in addition to other volunteers.
While the runners got ready to run we got ready for the runners. We stocked the tables full of cups with just the right amount of water.
And then we waited and waited and waited for the first runner to run by. It was fun to see the front of the pack runners as I never see them in a race as I am more of a middle of the pack runner. They were super fast and didn’t stop to get water.
My favorite part of being at the water station was all the encouragement I got to give out to the runners! I loved cheering everyone on as I passed out water to those who wanted it. And speaking of handing out water did you know that there is a technique to holding the cups out for runners? I never stop at water stations since I carry my own so this is something I never really considered. It is important for the person handing out the water to either hold the cup at the very bottom or the very top so that it allows the runner to easily grab the water. Who knew?
Another perk of volunteering at this race is that Chris was running it! And not only was he running it but he was running his first ever 10k! We neglected to take a pic or me or him but here is his race swag!
I got a nice sweaty hug from him as he passed my fluid station. He ended up finishing in 1:09:01! He did great and was even smiling afterwards!
I also saw my friends Mike and Bill who are both running the Tough Mudder with me and I also saw two fellow Idiots! (That’s a compliment I promise! Click here to find out why!)
Overall I really enjoyed volunteering but in all honesty I was jealous of those that were running. I am a runner, that’s what I do and it is what I enjoy.
Have you ever volunteered at a race before? What was your experience?
