If you are reading this post then you probably use Social Media as much as I do. There are lots of great things about Social Media. I love being able to have a voice in a way that I wouldn’t be able to if Social Media didn’t exist, I love connecting with people through Social Media that I would have never connected with otherwise and I love the communities that exist because of Social Media.
That being said, as much as I enjoy Social Media I do have a few pet peeves about it and for whatever reason they have been on my mind lately so I thought I would share them.
1. People who follow just to get you to follow. – You know what I am talking about right? This happens on Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and probably many other sites. Someone will follow you just so you follow them and then they unfollow you.
Because of this I clean up my Twitter, Instagram etc from time to time and unfollow those people. They way I look at it is if they don’t think I am worth following then why would I think they are worth following. Of course, there are some exceptions. There are some people who don’t follow me but I keep following them because I enjoy them so much. And I may not follow someone back if I find their content to be offensive or if they have a huge disparity in the number of followers vs the number they are following.
2. Bullying – Sometimes people don’t think about what they say and this goes ten fold on Social Media sites. Being anonymous behind a computer screen gives people the courage to be mean or disrespectful when maybe they wouldn’t in their normal lives. And that is just not cool! At. All.
3. Blog Giveaways – As you know I have done many giveaways on my blog. And I love them. I love being about to give you something cool for free and I love entering giveaways on other blogs because I also love free stuff.
Here is what I don’t like. Bloggers who expect you to keep checking back with their blog to see if you win. Usually you have x number of days to respond after you find out you are a winner or they will give your prize to someone else.
Now I understand that giveaways are to an extent meant to help you build an audience and that ideally you want the winner to be someone who reads your blog. I get all of that.
However, people are busy. We all have regular lives we need to lead and sometimes that means I can’t read all the blogs that I follow on a particular date. Sometimes I have to play catch up and read them after a couple of days and on the rare occasion maybe at the end of the week.
Because of all of that when I do giveaways I always email the winner. Personally I think that is the right thing to do. If that person doesn’t respond to the email then I think it is ok to draw another winner after x number of days.
So what about you? Do you agree with my pet peeves?
What other ones would you add to the list?
