I received a synopsis of SPARTAN UP! and I will be receiving a full copy of the book when it is released in exchange for my honest review of the book. All opinions are my own!
For most of the year I have been stalking the Spartan Race website to plan the races that I will be doing in order to complete the Spartan Trifecta. So far I am signed up for the Indiana Sprint on 4/26 and the Chicago Super on 9/27. I still need to find a Beast that works for my schedule, so I am
patiently waiting for more Beast dates to be revealed.
While on the Spartan website I noticed that Joe De Sena, the founder of Spartan Race, has written a book called Spartan Up! The book will be released on May 17th but since patience is not my virtue, Spartan was nice enough to provide me with a synopsis of the book to hold me over until it is released.
And guess what? I devoured the synopsis! I have no doubt that Spartan Up! is going to be a great read as the synopsis alone was entertaining and motivating.
I have to say that I really think that Spartan Up! is a book for everyone. Whether you already run OCR’s, have thought about running OCR’s or even if you think you have no interest in OCR’s, you will get something out of this book.
According to the synopsis, Spartan Up! is based on three key ideas: Question your assumptions, less is more and discipline is everything. Those are three things I think we can all use in our lives.
The book is broken up into ten chapters that will help you apply the Spartan way into all areas of your everyday life. One of those areas is attitude and this quote from the synopsis very much resonated with me.
“Distance events force you to focus your mind. In contrast, our society likes to stay distracted, always chasing the next shiny object. We train to keep our minds busy, and our minds are willing accomplices. Soon we have no choice: We are slaves to our anxious, darting minds and the constant stream of useless mental chitchat. This sort of mental chatter isn’t really thinking, it’s neurological white noise driving you to distraction from what really matters.”
