You all know that I love, love, love the OCR community! I really do. Obstacle course racers and mud runners are my people and I am proud to belong to such a badass group. But like all sports / groups there has to be a small percentage of people who confuse being badass with just being a straight up ass.
So let’s set the record straight shall we? For those that are having a hard time deciphering between what an ass and a badass is, I am going to break it down for you, Jeff Foxworthy style.
You might be an ass if:
1. You set up a Facebook page to badmouth an elite obstacle course racer (or any kind of racer) and then invite others to join the page to help you bully and belittle that racer.
If you are like me, you are probably finding it hard to believe that something like that would happen. But it did. And my girl Jenny Ann from The Running Thriver called out all those asses that participated. You can click here to read more about the whole debacle. Obviously Jenny Ann is badass for doing what she did but that’s just the kind of girl she is. Badassery at its finest!
2. You are an elite obstacle course racer that participated in the above said incident.
You can refer back to Jenny Ann’s post to see a comment from an elite racer, who obviously was encouraging the purpose of that dreadful Facebook page.
For the record, I don’t know that elite racer and I don’t know Laura (the one who the FB page was targeting) but I know OF them. Prior to this incident I have found both of them to be equally inspiring. But now? Now, I have no respect for the elite racer that posted the negative comment. Like it or not elite racers are role models and should conduct themselves in a manner that shows that. And if they happen to be sponsored athletes, I would think that they would want to conduct themselves in a manner that keeps those sponsorships intact because I don’t know about you, I have no interest in buying from whatever company supports poor sportsmanship.
Let’s face it, we will all encounter people that we do not like but it is one thing to not like someone it is quite another to act like an ass. I recommend saving all of that frustration for the course and using it to kick some ass out there. That’s classy and class never goes out of style.
3. You make fun of those that run other Mud Runs and OCRs that you deem as “lesser than.”
I can’t tell you how many times I have seen people make comments about Warrior Dash being easy and a girl’s race.
I got my start in mud runs and OCRs through Warrior Dash and my first experience was no walk in the park. It was hard. And let’s not forget that “easy” is a very relative term. What may be easy for me might be hard for you and vice versa. And there isn’t any shame in that. What there is shame in is being an ass and discouraging someone from getting out there and living life.
And don’t even get me started about certain races being a “girl’s race.” I do not believe for one minute that any guy who makes those kind of statements hasn’t ever been chicked in a race. You know that you have and you know that will continue to get chicked. Why? Because we have this whole equality thing going on right now that I am kind of digging. One that makes Warrior Dash, Tough Mudder, Spartan and any and every other race out there….a girl’s race. And a guy’s race. Pretty badass right?
4. If you call out and / or complain about racers who skip an obstacle or don’t complete all of their burpees.
The only racers out there who are obligated to do all of the obstacles or all of their burpees are the elite racers. That is the perk of running in the elite heat. Otherwise, those racers running in the open heats owe you nothing. Not to mention, if you have the ability to focus on what other people are doing while you are running your race, you are not doing it right. But if you can’t help but focus on others then focus on offering encouragement and assistance throughout the course. That’s badass right there.
Moral of my list: being a badass will get you a lot further in life than being an ass. Make the right choice.
