This past Saturday Chris and I ran the Kona Run 10k also known as Chris’s birthday 10k! That’s right, not only was it race day but it was also Chris’s birthday. How awesome is that?!?!
This was Chris’s second time running the race but it was my first time. Although you may remember that I volunteered at it last year. While I thoroughly enjoyed the volunteer experience last year, I was jealous of the bf and his awesome surfboard medal so I made sure that this race was on my list this year. PLUS it was the second race in the Kona Grand Slam so all around it was a must do race!
The race started on the track of Northville Downs which is a horse track. I don’t think they do horse racing there anymore though. It was a neat experience to do a lap on the horse track before we headed out onto the hilly course. I maaaaay have pretended that I was a horse while I was out there. Maybe not. Nobody really knows for sure. 😉
Not long after we exited the horse track we got to tackle one of the first hills on the course and then they just kept on coming. Who knew Northville was so hilly?
The bf and I planned to run the race together from start to end because 1)It was his bday and it just seemed right and 2) we needed to get similar 10k times to use for corral placement for the Disney Rebel Challenge event. So because of that I let Chris set the pace. We ended up walking most of the hills but started right back up running again once we got to the top. Oddly enough out of all the 10ks that Chris has done his PR is at the Kona Run. Yes, his PR is on a hilly course. It was looking like we were going to break his PR but we ended up coming in just a little over it. No biggie.
The race ended at Ford Field and no not THE Ford Field. It was a little baseball field in Northville. It was a fun finish line though because as you ran in there was a steel drum band playing and at the time we ran by they were playing some song they made up about running. Then you ran around the field and to the finish line so there was a lot a people hanging out as runners came in.
At the finish line, I got an awesome medal!
Although the surfboard one from last year is still cooler in my opinion.
There was also someone thanking runners for running the race which I though was a nice touch because I have never seen that before. Then there was a plethora of food items to choose from! Bagels, bananas, granola bars, water, ice cream AND popsicles! I LOVED LOVED LOVED the popsicles. Aaaaaah!
In true Kona style this was a great race! I really liked the course, the swag and the refreshments. We plan to be back.
What did you do this past weekend?
Anyone get some racing or running in?
