Now that my Trifecta goal has been accomplished I figured I would recap my experience as a whole and let you know what I thought about it.
As you may already know, one of my goals for 2014 was to achieve the Spartan Race Trifecta. To do so all I had to do was run a Spartan Sprint, Super and Beast all in one calendar year. Sounds simple enough, right?
I would say the most difficult part was trying to figure out when and where we would run each of the three distances. Unfortunately Spartan has yet to come to Michigan (maybe next year???) so in order to complete the goal we had to go out of state. We certainly don’t mind traveling, we do have a travel blog too after all, but travelling for all three races did add extra expenses to our goal.
We ended up doing the Sprint in Indiana. That was our first taste of Spartan Race and we were quite impressed with the course and our experience overall. You can read my full recap of the Indiana race by clicking here. We ran the Super in Chicago which you can read about here and then one week later we ran the Beast in Ohio. Click here to read the Beast recap.
I do think having the Super and Beast a week a part was a bit much for us. It really didn’t give us enough time to recover but it had to be done because those locations were the best options for us to tackle the Super and Beast distances.
As a whole I really enjoyed my Spartan experiences. I found the terrain on the courses to be unlike any obstacle course race that I had run before. The obstacles were challenging but not gimmicky and the obstacles varied at each location giving each race a unique experience. The camaraderie at the races was unexpected and appreciated. For those reasons and many others, Spartan quickly became my favorite OCR.
At the end of the three races I collected three Spartan shirts, all exactly the same unfortunately, and 6 medals. Three of the medals were for finishing the individual races and the other three medals were the pie shaped Trifecta pieces that formed one big medal. Spartan was very smart to introduce the pie shaped medals in addition to the regular medals as I am sure it inspired a lot of people to accomplish the Trifecta this year.
So would I do it again? ABSOLUTELY! And it appears that Spartan is going to be changing things up for next year. Here is a teaser from one of their recent emails.
I’m not sure about the new obstacles….alligators??? lol But I am definitely on board with the different color finisher tees as I had mentioned that idea in one of my recap posts!
Did you run any Spartan Races this year? What did you think of them?
What are your thoughts on the proposed changes for 2015?
