What have I been reading lately? I have been reading The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up ~ The Japanese art of decluttering and organizing by Marie Kondo.
Marie Kondo makes a living helping people organize their homes….for good! She uses her own method, the KonMari Method which is unlike any other method out there and surprisingly not a single client of hers has gone back to their cluttered ways! The method encourages you to only keep items which “spark joy” and the decluttering process is tackled all at one time (not little by little which other methods recommend) using her category by category system.
One of the most striking things about this book is how passionate Marie Kondo is about decluttering and organizing. It makes sense seeing as how she has made a living out of it but based upon the stories she tells of her childhood it seems as if she was born to help people tidy up.
At first I found her passion to be a bit overwhelming and maybe even a bit strange but she eventually won me over because her method is so unique and quite frankly it makes a lot of sense. While reading the book, I could immediately think of things that I have been hanging on to that really don’t spark joy anymore and I think I will have an easier time letting them go now that I use “sparking joy” as my benchmark for keeping things in my home. I am also eager to put to use some of her organizational strategies too. Especially the unusual way that she stores clothes in dressers. (I would tell you, but that would spoil the fun of getting the book!)
If your home needs a little or a lot of tidying up I highly recommend this book. It is unlike all of the others out there and it is a great read. It is also a best seller on Amazon!
