2014 was a good running year for me. I ran more races in 2014 than in any other year since I started racing (clicker HERE to see all the races I have run) and most importantly I had a lot of fun doing it.
So as a fun way to recap my racing year, I thought I would put together a list of my best races from 2014. (I will try not to give all the awards to Spartan Race, but no promises.)
So here goes!
Best Course Award:
The Spartan Sprint in Indiana was my first Spartan Race and I absolutely loved the course. Now that I have run three Spartan Races I can vouch that Spartan courses are pretty tough but the Indiana course was by far the toughest. Some of the hills on the course were straight up and because of the mud we had to grab onto trees to pull ourselves up those hills. It was awesome and I would love to do that course again!
I did the Back to the Beach half for the first time last year and I have it on my list again for this year. A majority of the course is on trails and it is a very scenic course.
Best Medal Award:
Hand down my favorite medal is my Trifecta medal. Earning that bad boy was one of my goals for 2014 and it only took me running all three distances of the Spartan Race to get it. (Which happened to be in three different states too!)
Best Local Race Award:
I ran a lot of great local races this year including Back to the Beach and Kona but my most favorite local race is Rock CF. I have run this race since it first started and it has never let me down. The course is awesome, it is well-organized, the medal and shirts are great, the post race fuel it top-notch and it supports a great cause.
It goes without saying that I will be running it this year as well. It is their 5 year anniversary and they have made mention that they will be doing something special for those that have run it every year. I can’t wait to see what that is!
Best Series Award:
I ran two series races in 2014. Spartan Race and the Kona Grand Slam series. Each series was very different from the other and each series was awesome for different reasons but I am going to have to give the award to Spartan Race.
2014 was my first Spartan experience and they quickly became my favorite race after running the Sprint back in April. I love obstacle course racing and I was very impressed with their races and their culture. I am proud to call myself a Spartan and I look forward to running more of their races. Aroo!
Best Reason to Travel Award:
I did a lot of local races this year and really only traveled for the Spartan Races and for the Christmas Story Run. I loved that Spartan took me to remote locations that I never would have otherwise gone to. Going to small towns to run a Spartan Race takes me back to my roots because I am a small town girl at heart. However, I am going to give this award to the Christmas Story Run because it is such a great themed race and has become our kickoff to the Holiday Season by giving us a great excuse to head to Ohio to visit the Christmas Story House.
Best Race to Seek Redemption in 2015 Award:
If you have been reading my recaps from last year, you may already know the winner of this award. Hands down the race that kicked my butt the most was the Spartan Beast in Ohio. It was cold, it was rainy, it was snowy, it was hailing and it was a long tough course. It broke me mentally and physically and although at the time it made me want to quit doing OCRs and running…it eventually sparked a fire in me to go back and seek redemption. The best races are the ones that eat you up and spit you out and then leave you wanting to come back for more. The Ohio Spartan Beast did exactly that.
Tell me about your year of running!
What awards would you give to the races that you did?
