Disclosure: As a member of the From Left to Write Book Club I received a copy of The No More Excuses Diet for review purposes. All opinions are my own.
I just finished reading The No More Excuses Diet by Maria Kang and I loved it! You will remember Maria Kang because a picture of Maria with her three boys with the title “What’s Your Excuse?” went viral and created some controversy amongst people who took offense to it. Now you know who I am talking about right?
I personally did not find her picture to be offensive. Instead I found it to be inspiring. We all have those excuses that we tell ourselves that give us an “out” as to why we can’t be the best possible version of ourselves and I feel that her picture was showing us that those excuses are just that, excuses. They are not facts. And we do ourselves a great disservice by buying into those excuses instead of rising up to live our best lives.
But this post isn’t about that photo. Instead, I want to bring attention to a topic that Maria mentioned in her book and that is the importance of celebrating non-scale victories. I think a lot of us spend far too much time worrying about the number on the scale. We often base our self-worth on what the scale tells us each time we get on it even though our weight is just one piece of the fitness equation and more often than not, the scale lies.
There are so many more pieces that define our level of fitness like body fat percentage, blood pressure, etc. Let’s not forget that the number on the scale doesn’t take into account our muscle mass and more often than not when we gain muscle we actually gain weight, so even though we are fitter than we were before, we weigh more. So I think it is time to stop defining ourselves by what the scale tells us and instead celebrate our non-scale victories.
Here are some non-scale victories that I think are worth celebrating!
- Running a new distance for the first time.
- Feeling more comfortable inside your clothes.
- Increasing the amount of weight you can lift.
- Trying a new workout.
- Eating healthy because it makes you feel good not because you are on a diet.
- Completing a race.
- Finally being able to do pull ups! (One of my goals!)
- Stepping outside your comfort zone to do something you always wanted to do.
- Setting a good example for your kids.
- Inspiring others to join you in your fitness journey.
Those are just a few ideas of non-scale victories you could celebrate and there are so many more!
