Yesterday was a first for me. Mowgli (our goldendoodle mix) and I went for a run together.
The only reason why we hadn’t gone for a run sooner is because Mowgli was too young. It is generally recommended that dogs start running with you after they turn one year old. And since Mowgli recently celebrated his first birthday, I thought we would try a short run together.
We drove to the Stony Creek Mountain Bike Trails because that is my favorite place to run and I thought it would be a place of fewer distractions. Mowgli is a scaredy cat and is afraid of anything that moves be it a car, people, other animals…. you name it, he is afraid of it. And I have to confess that part of that is because we don’t take him (or Chewie) on walks often enough. I know, I know. Unfortunately there is only so much time in the day.
Initially Mowgli was not fond of our outing (he doesn’t like car rides) but once we got to the trails he was pretty excited about our adventure. We kept pace with each other pretty well and he was well behaved for the most part. Although he did make some growling noises every time we passed other people and dogs, which wasn’t often.
We ended up running / walking just a little bit over 1.5 miles which seemed to be a good distance for Mowgli. It tired him out a bit but didn’t completely exhaust him. He relaxed comfortably in the back seat and then was ready to play fetch when we got back home.
Do you run with your dog?
I would love to hear pointers!
