Winter is just about to come to an end and with spring comes the official start of the running season! Woot! There are so many great races right here in the Metro Detroit area so you will not need to go far to get your race on.
You all know I have all the love for Absopure. They are one of my favorite Michigan based companies. They have great products (we especially love their home delivery service!), they are dedicated to the communities that they work in and they support the running community by being the official water sponsor of all Running Fit races! If you haven’t yet had the privilege of running a Running Fit race, you are in for a treat. They know how to treat runners right just like Absopure takes care of their customers.
To help you get started on your running plans, here are a few of my favorite spring races across the D!
Corktown Race ~ March 12th
This is not a Running Fit race but it is a race that Absopure is a sponsor of and it is a must do! The race is in its 35th year this time around so you know they have to be doing something right. It takes place in Corktown with the starting line right outside of Michigan Central Station. It’s an area rich in history and an area that has started to shine again. You really have to see it!
The Corktown Race has become one of the largest 5ks in Michigan and I can attest that it also has some of the best crowds. Since the race follows the same route at the Detroit’s St Patrick’s parade, the route is filled with people ready to get their party on. The race has a great t-shirt and medal for all who finish, so what more could you ask for? Okay maybe some warm weather but this is Michigan and you never know which way the wind will blow but I guarantee you will have a good time regardless of the weather.
You can read my recap of the 2015 Corktown Race here.
Tip: Dress in a St Patrick’s themed costume! It’s good luck.
Rock CF Rivers Half Marathon, 5k and Relay ~ March 26th
The Rock CF Rivers race has all of the components of an excellent race. It is a well-organized, it benefits a great cause (Cystic Fibrosis), it is scenic, it has great swag (shirt and medal) and the post race food can’t be beat (homemade cookies!!!). The race director will make you feel like a rock star no matter what place you finish in, just like Absopure treats its customers! Since this race is such an incredible experience, it is perfect for a first time racer or a seasoned racer.
Rock CF is has become known as a race that you can PRs at, in fact that is where I got my half PR!
Tip: Sign up for the half marathon if your training allows it. The course is excellent and you will want to experience every mile possible.
Martian Race ~ April 22nd
The Martian Invasion of the Races is a Running Fit event and of course Absopure is the official water sponsor. I always like knowing that I can get my favorite water on the course. The Martian race takes place in Dearborn and they offer a 5k, 10k, half marathon, marathon and a kids race. Not many races can offer all of those distances so there is definitely something for everyone.
You may have guessed already that the Martian Races are themed favoring yes, the martians. And what martian doesn’t love great race swag that includes an out of this world shirt and medal? I know I do! Read all about my experience as a martian here.
Tip: The starting line has a bit of a hill but after that you are smooth sailing.
Trail Marathon ~ April 29th + 30th
If I had to choose between road running and trail running to spend the rest of my running miles, I would easily choose the trails. If you feel as I do, the Trail Marathon in Pinckney by Running Fit is the race for you. On the 29th they will have the half marathon and on the 30th is the 5 mile, marathon and 50k. The race is no joke. It is not an introductory trail race. This is single track and hilly and it will break even the best trail runner. So yes, you should totally do it! And please don’t train like I did.
Tip: This race has some really cool bridges that you will get to run across. Some of them seem like they go straight up into the sky. You will curse them and be in awe of them at the same time. You are welcome.
Hightail to Ale ~ May 5th
Hightail to Ale is the race for the runner with a drinking problem. Or a drinker with a running problem. And of course, I am totally referring to Absopure water of course. Hightale to Ale is dubbed as a keg party with a 5k warm up.
The race starts and finishes at Atwater Brewery with a bit of the Detroit Riverfront thrown into the middle. The middle part is the running portio of the event. 😉 With custom shirts and a bottle opener finishers medal, I think we will both agree that this race needs to go on your party errrr I mean race list.
Tip: Hightail to Ale is an evening race, no alarm needed!
Back to the Beach ~ May 21st
Back to the Beach takes place in my favorite place to run, Stony Creek Metropark. You will need to purchase a park pass to enter but if you are a Metro Detroiter you really should have a yearly pass already. You are missing out on some great parks if you don’t. Back to the Beach offers a 5k, 10k and a half marathon. It take place on a variety of surfaces (especially if you run the half), including asphalt, dirt trails, dirt roads, boardwalks, city streets and more.
The race has great swag but what really sets this race apart from the others is their volunteers! I do not know where they get these people but they are the most enthusiastic race volunteers I have every come across.
Tip: If race day is a hot one, the volunteers will have cold towels available in several spots on the course and they will feel heaven-sent! Do not pass them by.
What spring races are you planning?
