If going out-of-town on a summer vacation isn’t in the budget or on your agenda this year (or even if it is), you may want to consider a staycation right here in Metro Detroit. The Detroit area is full of great attractions that are sure to please every age and personality. Our family loves to go on adventures in the Metro Detroit area and beyond and we share those experiences on our travel blog, The Adventurers. To celebrate summer I thought I would share some of our favorite Metro Detroit attractions with you to inspire you to go on an adventure of your own.
The Henry Ford
The Henry Ford is home to the Henry Ford Museum, Greenfield Village, Ford Rouge Factory Tour and the Giant Screen Experience. You could easily spend several days at The Henry Ford with everything that they have to offer. We are partial to the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village. Greenfield Village is a great outdoor attraction that will make you feel like you have stepped back in time and Henry Ford is an amazing museum of American history that is perfect for any weather.
If you love animals and being outdoors, the Detroit Zoo is the place for you. Spend the day checking out the animals (our favorite exhibit is the Polk Penguin Conservation Center), have a picnic by the Rissman PlayVenture playground and let the little ones run off some energy and then end the day with a carousel ride. Don’t forget to take a picture in front of the Rackham Bear Fountain, it is a yearly tradition for us. Also our youngest would want you to know that the Detroit Zoo is great for playing Pokemon!
Goldfish Swim School
Every day feels like a tropical paradise inside the many Metro Detroit area Goldfish Swim Schools. Whether you decide to stop in for a Family Swim or sign your kids up for a Jump Start Clinic or other Swim Lessons, I guarantee your kids won’t even realize they are learning while on summer break. I won’t tell if you won’t.
We love going downtown Detroit as there is so much to see and do. The RiverWalk is a scenic outing with views of the Detroit River, Canada and the Ambassador Bridge. You can bring your bikes or walk from the RiverWalk up through the Dequindre Cut. You can pack a picnic lunch or eat at the RiverWalk Cafe. There are play areas, volleyball courts, a carousel and more. You could also make a stop at the Outdoor Adventure Center as well.
Campus Martius Park
Campus Martius is another favorite of mine. When I worked downtown I would walk down there on my lunch break and get food from the food trucks and listen to music in the park. It is no exaggeration when I say there is always something going on in Campus Martius. Nearby in Cadillac Square right now they have the Quicken Loans Sports Zone featuring basketball courts and sand volleyball courts. For lunch or dinner there are so many fabulous restaurants in the immediate area, even one that was made out of a shipping container!
To help you get a jump start on celebrating and exploring this summer, Goldfish Swim School is giving away a free Jump Start Clinic to one of you. The Jump Start Clinic is designed to get kids ready for water in a hurry. It includes four or five consecutive days of 30 minute swim lessons. B took their traditional swim lessons and his confidence and technique has vastly improved! I can’t speak highly enough about the impact Goldfish Swim School has had on B and myself. They are great in every way. Please note, you must live within driving distance of a Metro Detroit area Goldfish Swim School location. To enter the giveaway simply use the widget below. Good luck!
