Overthinking the Marathon Book Review

OtM-170w

Full Disclosure: I was given a copy of the book Overthinking the Marathon to read and review but all opinions are my own!

I love reading and I love running so it is only natural that I read books about running! A couple of months ago, I was contacted by Ray Charbonneau (a runner, blogger and author) to see if I would be interested in reading and reviewing his book, Overthinking the Marathon. Of course, I said yes!

The book follows Ray on his 17 week journey of preparing for his 21st Marathon! Yes, 21st! Quite impressive if you ask me. The book is an easy read and it makes you feel like you are right along Ray while he completes his marathon training and the marathon itself! The best part of the book for me, was how real it was! Ray revealed the good, the bad and the ugly of his training which is just the way it should be because we all know that nothing is perfect and nothing goes 100% according to plan. Ray also revealed his training tips and techniques that would certainly help any runner who is training for a marathon or a race of any distance.

I haven’t run a marathon yet….but it is on my bucket list and after reading Overthinking the Marathon I have an even greater desire to run one!

If you are looking for a great Summer read, I highly recommend this book. To purchase a copy or to get more information on the book and Ray Charbonneau, click here!

Ray has a new book coming out soon that will be helping support the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing through The One Fund Boston. Stay tuned for that book too!

Jillian Michaels Maximize Your Life Tour

It was hard to get good pics. This is the best one.

It was hard to get good pics. This is the best one I got.

Last Thursday I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Jillian Michaels Maximize Your Life show when it was at the Fox Theater in Detroit! Chris actually won the tickets through this blogger, who by the way always has super awesome giveaways on her blog! Chris entered the contest because I really wanted to go (isn’t he a good boyfriend?) and since he had to work I got to take my friend Mike who you have seen on my blog through various races that we have run together.

Oddly enough I have never seen a full  episode of The Biggest Loser (I don’t watch much TV) although I have seen a few minutes here and there so I didn’t really have any specific expectations about what I expected from Jillian or her show. The reason I was interested in going was because I knew she would be talking about health, fitness and living your best life which are all things that I am interested in!

The first half of the show was about things that I already knew a lot about. What to eat, what not to eat, the importance of working out, etc. Although I was familiar with most of the concepts that she touched on, I found them to be good reinforcers of what I am already doing and good reminders about the things I still need to work on. What do I need to work on? Improving the quality of the food I consume. I already try to stay away from processed food as much as possible and fill my diet with lots of whole foods, however I am not always good about either avoiding foods from the “dirty dozen list” or buying those foods as organic. I also need to start buying organic meat and dairy products.

The second half of the show was about taking responsibility of your life and really examining what is working and what is not working. She talked about finding your passion and truly believing that everything that is good in the world is out there for your taking and that you are worthy and deserving of those things. She was not a proponent of the idea that all you have to do to get the things you want is to channel all your energy into thinking about those things, instead she emphasized that to get those things it will be hard work but it will be worth it. She talked about finding they why in the things that you do. She also recommended that you set your alarm for every hour as a reminder to really be present in that moment. To ask yourself what you are doing, how you feel about what you are doing and just in general take stock of the here and now. The reason she recommends this is that all too often we go through our days and life in a very mindless way and that by being more present we can find our passions and live a happier life.

Overall, I really enjoyed her show and so did Mike. We both walked away with a renewed energy and a greater sense of focus.

Have you attended the Jillian Michaels show? What did you think of it? If not, have you attended any other motivational type shows? What did you think of those?

Under Armour What’s Beautiful Contest

This post is sponsored by Under Armour through FitFluential and all opinions are my own!

UA_WB3_Poster

I am so excited about the Under Armour What’s Beautiful contest! The contest is all about redefining the female athlete, setting individual goals and crushing them, joining teams for team goals and challenges and general all around badassery! You know that I love me some badassery!

It is true that I was approached by Under Armour through FitFluential to be part of the contest but prior to that I was already considering joining because it is right up my alley! To be quite honest, it is a good fit for ANY woman.

And the timing for this contest could not be better for me. Did you see this goal that I put out there for the world to see? Yeah , that is going to be my individual goal for the What’s Beautiful contest. That’s right I WILL run back to back Tough Mudders in ONE weekend!

And on top of that I have been thinking lately that I have a lot of fitness wishes that I have yet to make into fitness accomplishments. It is time to do something about that. Because of that desire I have started a team for the What’s Beautiful contest called Fitness Warriors. The goal of the group is to turn “I wish” into “I did!” You know all those times when you see someone do something amazing and you say to yourself “I wish I could do that!” My group is all about taking those wishes and making them into accomplishments. Each person’s desires may be different but that will be the fun part of the group and having support and encouragement to get out of your comfort zone and make those wishes come true is always a good thing!

I would love for you to be part of this contest! Click here to sign up and set your own personal goal! Once you do that, be sure to follow me! Click here for my Under Armour What’s Beautiful profile! I promise to follow back. Lastly, join my team by clicking here! I look forward to seeing you on the What’s Beautiful site!

Oh, I almost forget! Prizes!!! What is a contest without prizes, right? Each week Under Armour will give away swag bags full of great gear and at the end of the contest (It is 8 weeks long) Three winners will be flown to Costa Rica to attend a four-day yoga and surf retreat plus much more!!! Amazing stuff, right?

So what are you waiting for? Join the Under Armour What’s Beautiful contest now! Set a big goal and crush it! I know you can do it!

New Blog Series: Mud Runner Monday!

PhotoGrid_1367764042700

Next Monday I am starting a new series on my blog called Mud Runner Monday! It’s no secret that I am a mud run addict and naturally I am a big fan of all runners but most especially mud runners! Mud  / obstacles runners are a different breed of runners, in my opinion, and each mud runner has his / her own story. My goal is to share some of the stories with you and introduce you to the world of mud running through the different runners that will be featured on my blog.

If you are a mud runner and would like to be a part of the series just let me know! All you will have to do is answer some questions and send me some pictures for the post. It’s easy, I promise! Interested? Email me at bamoats@gmail.com

And speaking of mud runs, I think I have found the solution to my Tough Mudder problem. If you are not sure what I am referring to click here to read all about it.(Btw you were all incredibly supportive and uplifting about this issue. Thank you!) The solution? Run back to back Tough Mudders! I am currently signed up to run the Michigan Tough Mudder on Saturday June 29th so if I run on Sunday too that will complete my goal of running two Tough Mudders this year! It sounds crazy but I figure I will already be there and some of my teammates from Saturday are doing Sunday as well. This also means that I won’t have to worry about trying to fit another race into my schedule or alter my training for other races! It’s the perfect solution!

This will be the first time I have ever ran back to back races (and I have secretly been wanting to do it), so I am pretty excited about it!

Have you ever done back to back races before? How did it go? Also don’t forget to contact me if you want to be a featured mud runner for my new series!

Join my Tribe on Kumbuya!

kumbuya_logo_bw (2)

Have you heard of Kumbuya?

It is a new social media site that launched in the Fall of 2012. The best way I can describe it is that is has the look of  Pinterest with the functionality of Facebook groups. Basically you sign in and create a profile and then you can join any existing Tribe or create your own Tribe. Each Tribe has its own focus. For example, I created a Tribe called Health & Fitness Warriors where people who are into health and fitness can come to support, encourage and learn from each other! I would love for you to join my Tribe and share content that you think the group would enjoy. Be it blog posts, interesting articles, motivational quotes, recipes or anything else that is health and fitness related! Click here to join my Tribe, I hope to see you there!

Another piece of exciting information for my fellow Detroiters regarding Kumbuya is that they are opening up an office in the D! This means some exciting social media job opportunities will be heading this way and that is always a good thing! (I may have my eye on one of the positions, so I would appreciate it immensely if you would join my Tribe! :) )

Chicago Day #3: Verizon Health and Fitness Bloggers!

This post was made possible by the Verizon Health and Fitness Voices program. As a participant of the program I have been provided with a wireless device and six months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product. I was also invited to Chicago to kick off the program which included a hotel stay, travel expenses and an entry into the Shamrock Shuffle 8k. Click here for more info on the program.

My last day in Chicago started with some me time in the Hard Rock Hotel’s gym. I did a gentle 5 miles on the treadmill and despite pushing my legs to their limits at the Shamrock Shuffle I felt surprisingly good!

After getting my run in and getting myself showered and packed up, I met the rest of the Verizon Health & Fitness Voices Bloggers in the lobby. We then walked over to an office building and made ourselves comfy in a meeting room for the next few hours while we got down to business!

Some of the bloggers!

Some of the bloggers!

The only clue that we were given about the device that we would all receive was this: “Your device can’t run the Shamrock Shuffle 8K—but it has a marathon battery life. A single charge lasts up to 24 hours.” Hmmm I was intrigued about the marathon battery life. I was constantly plugging in my Droid Incredible. When I posted the hint on my Facebook page, one of my friends commented that they thought it would be the Droid RAZR MAXX HD.

Ready to find out what we got? Drum roll please……

IMAG0024

A Motorola DROID RAZR HD AND a Fitbit One and a $50 Verizon gift  card to use on accessories! It felt like Christmas!

Once we got our goodies we all got educated on them from a Motorola rep and we learned all about Verizon from a Verizon rep. They were both awesome and super helpful.

I am still in the “getting to know you” stage of both the devices so as I become more comfortable with them, I will share my thoughts on both of them with you! :)

Do you have either a Fitbit or a Droid RAZR Max HD? Tell me how you feel about them!

A MizFit Book Review & Giveaway!

FCE23E313C_thumb

I just finished reading MizFit: How to Build Muscle and Lost Weight Without Losing Your Mind by Carla Birnberg aka MizFit. It was a great read and one I highly recommend for everyone, from fitness newbies to fitness pros and everyone in between! And I most especially recommend it for people who are trying to juggle kids, life and fitness!

But before I tell you more about the book, I want to make sure you are familiar with MizFit. I encountered her blog when I became a FitFluential Ambassador and have enjoyed reading each and every one of her posts since then! I love her blog voice and her realistic approach towards life and fitness. Click here to check out her blog, I guarantee that you will love it as much as I do. (P.S. Check out the MizFit Skort while you are there. It’s badass and helps a great charity!)

Now back to the book. I don’t want to give too much away because that would take away the fun of reading the book but MizFit reminded me that workouts don’t have to be work and they don’t have to be 2 hours long. She reminded me that workouts can feel like play and she also reminded me that if you have kids in your life, your workouts can involve them too!

In honor of fun and fitness, I am giving away 3 copies of MizFit’s e-book! Just use the rafflecopter form below for a chance to win one of the copies. Good luck!

A Christmas Survey

I saw this survey over at Triing2Survive and thought I would join in!

1. Favorite Christmas Album/CD: I don’t have a favorite but I am a big fan of Christmas music as long as its played after Thanksgiving and stops before the New Year.

2. Run on Christmas Morning or Take the Day Off? I don’t think I have ever run on Christmas before. If I could squeeze it in I would, but odds are it will be a rest day for me.

3. What do you usually eat on Christmas morning? Usually some sort of sweet item that I normally wouldn’t eat. Like sweet rolls, doughnuts or monkey bread! Yummy!

4. Favorite holiday or Christmas tradition? Ever since I can remember, I was allowed to open one present on Christmas Eve. I still do that today!

5. Real tree, fake tree or no tree? Fake tree. Just seems easier to me.

6. Christmas pajamas…yay or nay? I have never partaked in it before but it could be a new tradition I start with Mr. Sarcastic. Don’t you think he would love all of us to be dressed like this? ;)

7. Where do you spend the holidays? I don’t have any family in my immediate area and my work schedule doesn’t normally allow me to go anywhere so we have always had a low-key Christmas at home.

8. Food that you always have during the holiday season? Ham and sweets! Those both say Christmas, right?

9. Open presents all at once or take turns? Stockings yes or no? Definitely stockings. When I was a kid my brother and I always got to open our stocking before we woke up our parents. We were the type to get up around 5am so Santa was smart enough to put breakfast items and small games in our stockings to keep us busy and buy our parents some more sleep. I haven’t gotten to that point with Little B yet, as I am probably even more excited than he is on Christmas morning. lol And we generally take turns opening presents.

10. Favorite Christmas(ish) movie? I love Frosty the Snowman!

Now it’s your turn to join in! Answer a question or two from above in the comment section below!

Hung for the Holidays

When Carlyn from Just Keep Sweating decided to host an ornament swap I jumped at the chance! Who doesn’t like to get a new ornament to display on the Christmas tree AND get the opportunity to pick out an ornament for another person?!

My elf for the Hung for the Holidays ornament swap was Kasandra from UrbanInSuburbia and she sent me this ornament!

IMAG0682

There are lots of things that I love about this ornament! I love that it is running related and most especially that is says 13.1 on it as that is the farthest distance I have run! I also love that there is pink on it as it is one of my favorite colors! And most of all I love that Kasandra took the time to get to know me and select an ornament that she thought would be perfect for me. Thanks Kasandra!

I got to play elf for Kelly from Cupcake Kelly’s! I was super excited to be her elf because I read her blog on a regular basis and converse with her through social media. So she is a friend that I have just never met in real life. I know that Kelly liked her ornament since she already told me that she does but I can’t wait to read her blog post about it!

Did you participate in an ornament swap or some other type of swap for the holidays? If so, how did it go?
