First Little B graduated from Preschool and then he achieved this milestone as well!

Yep, he lost his first tooth!

I honestly didn’t even realize he was at that age yet.

Here is how it all went down. I dropped Little B off at school one day last week with the loose tooth still firmly (or so I thought) in his mouth.

Once at work I received a phone call from his school. Phone calls from school typically mean one thing, I need to come pick him up. But instead this is what I heard.

School: “Nothing is wrong. We just wanted to let you know that Little B lost his tooth. He got a drink from the drinking fountain and when he came back the tooth was gone. We think he swallowed it. We wanted to let you know because he was really upset about it as he wanted to leave it under his pillow for the Tooth Fairy but we assured him that she would still come.”

So there it is. Little B’s lost tooth is exactly that…lost. Who needs a silly tooth for the baby book when you can have an interesting story instead!?

We ended up writing a letter to the Tooth Fairy and putting that under his pillow instead. And if you know anything about the Tooth Fairy, I am sure you know just how smart she is. She did in fact know that Little B had lost a tooth. Check out what she left behind!

3. What one was your favorite and why?

My favorite is probably a tie between 2011 and 2012 Gladiator Runs. The first one was the most fun I have ever had in a race. Dressing up in an old wedding dress and slogging through mud and over obstacles was not only challenging but so much fun! Everyone wanted to help me. Some wanted pictures with me. My friend had such a great time, she said “I get to be the bride next year!” And you know what? She did! But she was SO inspired that she actually got married after the 2012 Gladiator Run. She and her fiance in a full wedding dress and tux, did all the obstacles while we as bridesmaids and groomsmen ran along to help and cheer for them. The race director let them get married on center stage after the race. Both those races embodied running as FUN and not as exercise or as something we “should” do.

4. What one was your least favorite and why?

My least favorite mud run was the LA Eco Mud Run at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Don’t get me wrong, I had a good time. I ran with my friend Nadine and we always have fun together. The reason it is my least favorite is because the mud pits were built up on a parking lot or flat grass. They made them out of plastic and sandbags, since there was no real natural terrain. The mud was full of gravel and it hurt to crawl through it. The obstacles were basically traffic barriers that you had to climb over. There was a few hundred feet of mud and obstacles and then most of the race was just a run on pavement around the Rose Bowl and surrounding golf course. I am pretty sure they use the same course for local 5Ks. I prefer mud runs with real mud in the dirt and interesting runs through varying terrain. The Gladiator Run, for example, ran up and down the steps of an amphitheater, adding extra challenge.

5. What is it about mud runs that appeals to you?

Mud runs are FUN, plain and simple. If you want to go out and race…find yourself a road race. You shouldn’t run a mud run unless you have a good sense of humor and are a little tough. There is a lot of laughing and getting dirty. Sometimes there is climbing something really tough. Once I had to go through a tank of ICE water. That really took my breath away!

6. How do you train for mud runs?

I don’t really train for them. Anyone with a reasonable amount of fitness can do a mud run. I have had friends who don’t run complete a mud run. There are always people there to help you with the obstacles and you don’t necessarily have to run. I like to run and push myself and see how fast I can go. However, you can’t really have a time goal unless you start out in the very front…sometimes there is a back up at the obstacles.

7. Do you have a special diet?

I try to eat healthy (whole foods, lean proteins, vegetable centric etc.), but I am a busy mom and I give myself permission to go with “easy” food sometimes.

8. What is the craziest thing you have seen at a mud run?

Running brides , Men in wedding dresses, Willy Wonka and Oompa Loompas….you name it. In fact, when I have run in “regular” clothes, I have felt more out of place than when running in a costume, at least when I run as a team.

9. What other mud runs do you have planned for this year?

I am signed up for one with some non-running friends on July 20. http://survivormudrun.com/locations/2013/colorado.php I might also sign up for the Warrior Dash in August http://www.warriordash.com/register.php?loc=Colorado&yr=2013&gclid=CIj6l_LTi7cCFQdgMgodu2EA9Q

10. Any advice for someone who is thinking about running their first mud run?

Have fun! If you want to run fast, find a different race…for mud runs, slow down and enjoy it. I wrote this article last year to help new mud runners know what to expect: http://theruniverse.com/2012/05/how-to-run-a-mud-run-the-beginners-guide-to-getting-muddy/

One of my 2013 running goals was to volunteer at a race and I did just that this past weekend!

My job at the race was to man fluid station #7. It was the last fluid station of the race and because of which every runner whether they did the 5k, 10k or 10 mile run all passed by my station! There were quite a few other people at my station as well including a Pom team and their parents in addition to other volunteers.

While the runners got ready to run we got ready for the runners. We stocked the tables full of cups with just the right amount of water.

And then we waited and waited and waited for the first runner to run by. It was fun to see the front of the pack runners as I never see them in a race as I am more of a middle of the pack runner. They were super fast and didn’t stop to get water.

My favorite part of being at the water station was all the encouragement I got to give out to the runners! I loved cheering everyone on as I passed out water to those who wanted it. And speaking of handing out water did you know that there is a technique to holding the cups out for runners? I never stop at water stations since I carry my own so this is something I never really considered. It is important for the person handing out the water to either hold the cup at the very bottom or the very top so that it allows the runner to easily grab the water. Who knew?

Another perk of volunteering at this race is that Chris was running it! And not only was he running it but he was running his first ever 10k! We neglected to take a pic or me or him but here is his race swag!

I got a nice sweaty hug from him as he passed my fluid station. He ended up finishing in 1:09:01! He did great and was even smiling afterwards!

I also saw my friends Mike and Bill who are both running the Tough Mudder with me and I also saw two fellow Idiots! (That’s a compliment I promise! Click here to find out why!)

Overall I really enjoyed volunteering but in all honesty I was jealous of those that were running. I am a runner, that’s what I do and it is what I enjoy.

Have you ever volunteered at a race before? What was your experience?

Last week Little B graduated from preschool!

The school put on a cute little ceremony that started out with the kids singing a couple of songs. After the songs they called each graduate up to receive his / her diploma while showing a picture of the kid as a baby and as they are now on the projector screen. In addition to the picture the screen also showed what the kid wants to be when he / she grows up. I predicted that Little B would either say he wanted to be a firefighter or Spiderman and he said…….a firefighter! I am sure that what he wants to be when he grows up is going to change a gazillion times between now and then but I know whatever it ends up being he will do great at it.

I got a good laugh out of what some of the other kids said that they wanted to be when they grow up. Some of the answers included a princess, a Daddy, an ice cream man, the Green Lantern, a superhero and many many more. Probably the funniest part of the entire ceremony was the laughter that came from the kids each time they saw one of their classmates baby picture. It was like they couldn’t even fathom that their friends could possibly have been babies at one point. It was super funny and their laughter was contagious.

After the ceremony the school had an ice cream sundae bar. Little B doesn’t like ice cream (strange, I know) but he enjoyed some of the toppings especially the gummy bears. I made up for his lack of ice cream eating and ate his share.

It’s hard to believe that we have already reached this milestone. My little boy isn’t that little anymore. It won’t be long before he will be going off to kindergarten. *tear* Until then we plan to celebrate his accomplishment and have an awesome Summer!

Dean Stevens 32 from Ellsworth, Ohio. Husband/Father, work at our local steel mill, volunteer firefighter/emt and a 2x Tough Mudder. Currently fundraising for my cousin Brandy Rosine who was lured by two of her so called friends last spring, brutally beaten and buried alive. Info can be found at www.brandyrosine.com

You can find me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!

2. What Mud runs have you done?

2 Tough Mudders, 4/14/12 and 4/27/13.

3. What one was your favorite and why?

The most recent Tough Mudder would be my favorite because I was able to get awareness for my cousin Brandy out to thousands of people after Sean Corvelle (emcee of Tough Mudder) told her story before every wave started including mine where a lot of my family was present to share in the moment for Brandy. It was a very emotional run for me but I had a lot of support on site and from friends/family on social media who were supporting Brandy and my quest to honor her.

4. What one was your least favorite and why?

Don’t have a least favorite. Both were a great experience and a lifestyle change for me, as well as learning curves to better myself as an athlete and a person.

5. What is it about mud runs that appeals to you?

Running on pavement to me is boring, monotonous, and at times a chore. Tough Mudders keep my body/mind guessing and are a blast. Not to mention the caliber of people I’ve had the privilege to meet from these Mudders is incredible. I used to have a lot of disgust for the human race. But the courage, determination, selflessness and overall people I’ve witnessed at these events have changed my outlook on things in life.

6. How do you train for mud runs?

This past run I hit the weights hard and completely changed my diet. I added 30lbs of muscle which I struggle with while running. I usually do my own Tough Mudder obstacle style designed HIIT routine 1-2 days a week, heavy weights 4-5 days a week, and running on trails 2-3 days a week for 5-6 months before the event.

7. Do you have a special diet?

I’m a picky eater so my diet consists of a lot of carbs, meat and plenty of it. I cut out ALL fast foods, fried foods, and junk foods. I’m currently taking dietary supplements to aid where I’m nutritionally deficient and also trying to incorporate whole foods and more fruits/veggies.

8. What is the craziest thing you have seen at a mud run?

Craziest thing I’ve seen at 2 Tough Mudders by far is the caliber of people participating with all types of shapes, sizes and some missing limbs. The mental grit and selflessness of these people is nothing short of inspiring to me.

9. What other mud runs do you have planned for this year?

I plan to run a Tough Mudder again in August this year, and a few next year. Someday I plan to run with my son when he is old enough.

10. Any advice for someone who is thinking about running their first mud run?

Advice to a newcomer to Tough Mudder and mud runs in general is to fully embrace what it is and why we do it. We each have a story, some of the things we’ve overcome in life, and some are running for someone who can’t. Know your limitations, bit don’t be afraid to push those limits. There will be times when you will question yourself and your abilities, we all rise and fall, but quitting is a pain that lasts forever.

I enjoy workout classes but my schedule is too hectic and erratic for me to commit to a specific time each week. Because of that I pretty much just workout at home, unless I am out running, of course. I have plenty of workout videos and different workouts that I have torn out of various magazines that I use for my workouts. However, I recently had the opportunity to try iBodyFit.com and I really like it!

At iBodyFit.com there are a ton of online workouts from Yoga to strength training. They even offer custom diets, running plans and so much more!

This is such a great tool for staying fit and healthy and luckily I have one Premium membership to iBodyFit.com to giveaway to one of you!

This post was made possible by the Verizon Health and Fitness Voices program. As a participant of the program I have been provided with a wireless device and six months of service in exchange for my honest opinions about the product. I was also invited to Chicago to kick off the program which included a hotel stay, travel expenses and an entry into the Shamrock Shuffle 8k. Click here for more info on the program.

I know most of you come to my blog for health and fitness related items but this is such an important message that I felt it needed to be shared. Verizon has partnered with other wireless carriers to launch a program called It Can Wait. It is a program that could save many lives if we all join together and spread the word! The premise of the program is simple, take the pledge to never text and drive. I know that most of us have good intentions of not using our phones while driving but perhaps on occasion we do anyways. I will admit that I am one of those people. Even though I know that I shouldn’t, I will sometimes read or respond to a text while driving.

Here are some startling statistics about texting and driving that have convinced me to take the pledge.

I don’t know about all of you but that information is an eye opener! I have a lot to live for and no text is worth putting my life in danger! Are you ready to join me in this important movement and take the pledge to never text and drive? Click here to do so and make sure you spread the word!

And just in case you need a little help in making sure you hold true to the pledge, download the free save driving app called Safely Go. This app can be set to answer your calls and texts while you are behind the wheel and help you drive distraction free!

After you take the pledge leave a comment below letting me know that you have joined me and also let me know what made you decide to take the pledge!

Full Disclosure: I was given a copy of the book Overthinking the Marathon to read and review but all opinions are my own!

I love reading and I love running so it is only natural that I read books about running! A couple of months ago, I was contacted by Ray Charbonneau (a runner, blogger and author) to see if I would be interested in reading and reviewing his book, Overthinking the Marathon. Of course, I said yes!

The book follows Ray on his 17 week journey of preparing for his 21st Marathon! Yes, 21st! Quite impressive if you ask me. The book is an easy read and it makes you feel like you are right along Ray while he completes his marathon training and the marathon itself! The best part of the book for me, was how real it was! Ray revealed the good, the bad and the ugly of his training which is just the way it should be because we all know that nothing is perfect and nothing goes 100% according to plan. Ray also revealed his training tips and techniques that would certainly help any runner who is training for a marathon or a race of any distance.

I haven’t run a marathon yet….but it is on my bucket list and after reading Overthinking the Marathon I have an even greater desire to run one!

If you are looking for a great Summer read, I highly recommend this book. To purchase a copy or to get more information on the book and Ray Charbonneau, click here!

Ray has a new book coming out soon that will be helping support the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing through The One Fund Boston. Stay tuned for that book too!
