A Halloween to Remember

I was really excited about Halloween this year, even more so than usual! For the first time ever, Brennen actually understood the concept of Halloween. He picked out his own costume, Barney the dinosaur, of course!  He even started practicing his trick or treating technique weeks before the big day even came.

On the night of Halloween, I made our traditional Halloween dinner. Mummy dogs!

What Halloween is complete without mummy dogs for dinner?

Normally after dinner, the hubby and I would both get Brennen in his costume, have our neighbor take a family picture of us and then I would take Brennen trick or treating while the hubby passed out candy at the house. We had a different plan for this year. Since neither one of us wanted to miss out on a minute of the first Halloween that Brennen was excited about , we decided to conduct a social experiment.

I call it, “The Honor System”

Yep, it’s true we left a bowl of Halloween goodies outside our house on a table with a note explicitly saying to take only two pieces of candy. Do you think it worked? You will have to read to the rest of this blog entry to find out!

Keeping with tradition we had our family picture taken!

Isn't he the cutest Barney you have ever seen?

Then we headed out for trick or treating for the first time as a family!

Brennen got a lot of attention and treats as he is pretty darn cute! A few of our neighbors even had special treats just for him! It was so nice! Brennen was way more involved in trick or treating than in years past. He would grab his pumpkin and go up to each house with me and say, “Trick or Treat!” He was also very entertaining as at every house he had to make chit-chat with the people. Here are just a few of the things he would say.

“Oh look at that TV!!!”

“Those doggies are SO cute!”

“I like your Halloween decorations.”

“This is a green house.”

I love my little chatterbox. It’s funny how just a short time ago he was very timid, things have certainly changed!

We only took Brennen trick or treating on the street we live on, but that alone took 50 minutes!!!  Again, he was VERY chatty! After we finished our street he started to get tired and he had plenty of candy in his pumpkin. Upon returning home we checked in on our social experiment and would you believe that despite being gone for almost an hour there was still plenty of candy left?!?! It just goes to show that people will make the right decision when faced with making a decision. :)

Once back home we all indulged in some goodies and then called it a night! Trick or Treating is hard work!

The Day I Looked Like a Crazy Person

image

Have you ever looked around a room and thought to yourself, “Wow, I’m the token crazy person today?” That was how I felt Wednesday when I took Brennen to see Barney at Kids Club Live.

I had high expectations for the day. I even posted on Facebook that it was going to be a Super Dee Duper kind of day. It seemed like a no-brainer, Brennen loves Barney and had a great time at Kids Club Live last year. What could go wrong?

Well, I failed to remember that Brennen has developed a fear of seeing TV characters in person. Somehow I managed to block out our first row experience at Sesame Street Live earlier this year or maybe I convinced myself that Barney would just be different.

It wasn’t different.

While sitting in out third row seat waiting for Barney to come on stage, a slew of characters began walking around the room, mingling with the crowd. As soon as Brennen caught a glimpse of the Cat in the Hat he started crying so loudly that the entire crowd looked over at us. He then put his blankie over his eyes, buried his head in my shoulder and used his grip of steel to cling to me for dear life. I tried desperately to console him, rubbing his back, talking to him, rocking him, etc. Nothing helped. This continued as Curious George, Super-Why and others came out. I could see other parents looking over at me and I knew what they were thinking, “Why don’t you leave, he is obviously scared?!?!” I wanted to say, “He loves Barney, really he does!” But I just smiled nervously.

I was still holding out hope that when Barney finally came on stage, Brennen would be just as excited and mesmerized as he was last year. But instead, he stayed in the same terrified position through Barney’s entire performance except for a few songs where he swayed from side to side while still covering his face and clinging to my shoulder. I asked him on several occasions if he wanted to go home or stay and every time he said he wanted to stay. When Barney left the stage, he sat up, removed his hands and blankie from his eyes, started clapping and said, “Yay, Momma! We did it!.” He then looked around and said, “Where did Barney go?”

On the way home, Brennen played a video that I recorded with my phone of Barney singing the “I love you, you love me” song over and over and over. Just before pulling into our driveway he said, “Can we go see Barney again?”
