What’s Beautiful Update: Week 1

This post is sponsored by Under Armour through FitFluential and all opinions are my own!

Every week I am going to do a post updating you on what is going on over at the Under Armour What’s Beautiful site. I wholeheartedly believe that if you are woman, you should be part of the contest so you can see all the awesome things being posted first hand, but that is just my two cents. (Pssst…click here to join in!)

Every week Under Armour posts different challenges that we can participate in and post about on our personal and team pages. Here are some of the things I posted on my personal page.

Sweat it out challenge.

Sweat it out challenge.

Written validation challenge.

The team that I created is called Fitness Warriors and every week I post a challenge for myself and the team members to complete. This week I asked everyone to create a fitness wish list and post it to the page. To me, a fitness wish is any of those times when you see someone do something or you hear someone talking about something and you say, “I wish I could do that or I want to do that.”

Here is mine!

I also decided that of the team members who participate in the challenge, I would randomly select one person to feature on my blog! This week’s is from Kristin P whose goal for the contest is to complete her first Tough Mudder amongst many other awesome goals! Take a look at her wish list!

My Thoughts on Boston

source

I haven’t blogged about Boston until now. I have been wanting to but I have been at a loss of what to say. Even now while typing this I am still struggling with coming up with words to describe how I feel about it.

In addition to that, I am not sure if I can say anything that hasn’t already been said by others. Not much can top this awesome letter or this post that sparked a global movement.

Despite all of that, I can’t not write a post about Boston.

When I first heard about the what happened at the Marathon my emotions were all over the board. I was shocked, sad, upset, disgusted, heart broken, angry, afraid and many many more.

For a brief fleeting moment I even thought to myself, “Maybe I shouldn’t run big races anymore.” That was a thought out of fear and it was immediately replaced with “Hell no, I am going to run whatever sized race wherever and whenever I want to. End of story.” I refuse to make decisions that are based on fear. I will not allow myself to be controlled by others.

I almost forgot to mention another emotion that I felt and still feel in light of these events. Proud. I have never been more proud to be part of the running community. I have always known that runners are generous and supportive people and the stories that are coming out of this tragedy are amazing. Like the runners who finished the marathon and then continued to run to the hospital to donate blood, or those who ran towards the bombing area instead of away from it to see what they could do to help and the person who finished the race and gave his medal to someone who wasn’t able to finish it.

I may not be able to help in the ways that the runners I mentioned were able to help. But I am going to help in my own way.

1. I purchased one of these shirts in which all of the proceeds go to The One Fund Boston, Inc.

They are now sold out but you can also donate directly to the fund if you wish.

2. I am going to run. I can’t think of a better way to honor those that lost their lives or were injured than to put on my running shoes and log some miles. There are many group runs being planned for today all over the world!

Here are a couple that I know of that are happening in the Detroit area.

1. The New Balance store in Farmington Hills is hosting a Runners for Boston run. Click here for more info.

2. The Hanson’s Running Shop in Royal Oak will be hosting a group run at 6:30pm.

Let me know what you are doing to honor Boston. Did you blog about it? Leave your link in the comments! Did you plan an event? Leave that link below as well.

St. Louis Recap: Day 2

As you know from yesterdays post, our first day in St. Louis was mostly about driving and food. Luckily day two had a lot less driving and a lot more food!

We started off day 2 with a little race that you may have already read about from my previous post. The SpeRUNking Sand Mine Challenge! After the race we headed back to the hotel to shower and de-sand ourselves.

Once cleaned up we headed to the attraction that St. Louis is most famous for……The Gateway Arch! The arch is our nation’s tallest monument at 630 feet tall! Yikes! When I was gathering information about our trip I discovered that you can actually ride to the top of the monument and get nauseating spectacular views of the city. Since I am deathly afraid of heights I made it very clear that I would only be observing the arch from the ground, as all sane people should. In fact I think my exact words were, “The one thing I will not be doing in St. Louis is going up to the top of the arch.”

Guess what this is!

It is the view from the top of the arch! And I saw it first hand! And I did not die! And guess what? I am really glad that I did the one thing that I said that I would not do while I was in St. Louis. I have to thank Chris for convincing me to go and holding my sweaty hand the entire ride up. :)

This view of the arch is pretty spectacular too!

After defying death at the arch we got lunch at Joey B’s on the Landing. The combination of racing in the morning plus taking on one of my biggest fears left me ravenous! The three of us devoured some St. Louis style pizza. Yes, St. Louis has its own style of pizza, that was one of the fun facts that I learned while I was stuck in the car on day one of the trip. As luck would have it, the restaurant we stumbled upon for lunch had their pizza featured on Rachel Ray! Another unique thing about Joey B’s is that they have a shot menu featuring 124 shots! We couldn’t resist trying one, so we had a creamsicle. One shot down, 123 more to go! ;)

Shots!

Shots!

After lunch we wandered around the city and then headed back to the hotel to relax before we headed out for the night. I used the downtime to take a nap. Ahhhhh what’ s better than a nap while you are on vacation?!

We rounded out our final day in St. Louis by having dinner and drinks at a dueling piano bar called Jive and Wail. I LOVE piano bars. In my early 20′s I was a regular at a piano bar, but that is a story for another time. This was Chris’s first time at a piano bar, so it was fun to share the experience with him. The food and drinks were great and the piano players were very entertaining. It was a fun way to end our time in St. Louis!

St. Louis was a lot of fun and I would highly recommend that you visit it for yourself, if you have not already had the pleasure. It makes for a nice weekend getaway and I am sure that it would be even more fun to visit when the weather is warmer!

St Louis Recap: Day 1

Now that you know about the race I did in St Louis, it is time to fill you in on all the details of the rest of the trip!

I should preface this with mentioning that I really don’t like long car trips. I hate sitting still for that long and I tend to get antsy and bored. Why I jumped at the chance to travel by car for over 1100 miles for a race is beyond me!

The morning of the trip to St Louis we had a HUGE snowstorm. The roads were awful and visibility was limited. Part of me was hoping that Chris or Mike would say that we shouldn’t go because I wasn’t going to back out with someone else backing out first. Well, no one backed out so we made our way through Michigan very, very, very slowly. I was lucky enough to be the driver through the most treacherous part of the route. Chris will tell you that  I almost killed us when I missed hitting another car by mere inches. I prefer to say that I got that out of the way at the beginning of the trip so that the rest of our trip would be smooth sailing! It’s all about perspective. ;)

Once we got out of Michigan the roads were clear and visibility was restored to normal! We took turns driving and when I wasn’t the driver, I entertained everyone with factoids about the various cities that we drove through, information about St. Louis, mad libs and other randomness. I have to give myself credit for making the best out of all those hours that we were stuck in the car.

Once we arrived at the hotel we took the hotel shuttle downtown to find a place for dinner. We ended up at a restaurant called Mosaic and the food was fantastic! Here is a look at what Chris and I had.

Chris had Prime Rib Sliders and I had the Korean BBQ Pork Apple. We were so fortunate to have stumbled upon this restaurant with doing any research or soliciting anyone for suggestions! Yay us!

After dinner we walked around downtown and had a drink while waiting for the hotel shuttle. Once back at the hotel Chris and I enjoyed some time in the hot tub and went to bed at a respectable time. It was race day eve after all!

SpeRUNking Sand Mine Challenge Recap

Last Friday my runner friend Mike, Chris (aka Mr. Sarcastic and yes we will talk more about him later) and myself set out on a small 550 mile (1100+ miles if you add in the drive home) road trip to St. Louis. I will blog more about the road trip itself and all the fun things we did later because today I am focusing on the purpose of the trip. A race, of course! And not just any race but a one of a kind race in a sand mine, the SpeRUNking Sand Mine Challenge. What is speRUNking you ask? Well it is the act of exploring caves while running, hurdling obstacles, crawling and tip-toeing through quicksand.” Awesome, right?!

The morning of the race we made our way from our hotel in St. Louis to Crystal City. It was a quick trip there and I have now come to believe that all epic adventures have directions that sound like this, “Follow fence line on your left until you come to a dirt road.”

We were lucky enough to get to the race early enough to park close to the sand mine and drive over this amazing one lane bridge.

560204_10151373953783283_705677919_n

Here is what it looked like once we got over the bridge and through the tunnel.

Mike and I picked up our race packets and had plenty of time to scope out the sand mine and the competition. Chris was not racing and thus became our personal photographer and holder of our stuff.

The race had waves starts that were 5 minutes apart. Mike and I were in the 3rd wave of the day and although we did not stay together we both thought the wave start went very well even though we found ourselves passing some people from the previous waves.

482530_10200662508829899_1610946842_n

This race was 3.2 miles filled with obstacles and sand, lots and lots of sand! I didn’t find the obstacles to be too difficult but there were a couple that I was not found of. One was a ladder that was laid vertically over a ditch like area. Some people were attempting to walk across the ladder but that just looked like an accident waiting to happen. I opted to crawl across it instead. (I believe someone smashed his face on the ladder when he fell and the injury ended up requiring surgery.) I also could have done without the fire jump. It was very similar to the fire jump in the Warrior Dash but since this was in a cave the fire made breathing difficult. The sand also made breathing difficult at times as it was kicked up into the air by the runners.

I finished the race in 34:04 which was good enough to place me 18th out of 100 in my age group and 172nd out of 896 total runners!

544307_10200662510029929_1490400351_n

If I lived closer, I would definitely do this race again but since I live so far away this will probably be the first and last time I do it. If you have the opportunity to do this race in the future I highly recommend it as it is a very unique experience!

I Went to Zumba!

One of my goals this month was to cross something off of my bucket list. Well guess what? My friend invited me to a free Zumba class at the dance studio she goes to so of course I HAD to do it!

As ridiculous as this might sound, I had no idea what to wear to Zumba. Ask me to go running or go to the gym and I know exactly what to wear but Zumba is a whole different story. I mean it is a workout / dance party in one! My friend warned me against wearing my running shoes to Zumba as shoes with traction tend to stick to the floor making it difficult to do some of the moves. This significantly reduced the number of available shoes I had for class! I ended up going with my Ahnu shoes that I wore on my San Francisco trip. And for my outfit? I went with something fun and easy to move in.

IMAG0786

The class turned out to be a ton of fun!  There were definitely some moments when I was totally lost but for the most part I was able to catch on to the moves and just enjoy myself.  The instructor was upbeat and perky; everything that you would want in a Zumba instructor. There was a wide variety of women there and it seemed like everyone was enjoying themselves and getting something out of the experience!

I would definitely do Zumba again, although it is probably not something I will do on a regular basis mostly because the nights I don’t have Little B are usually reserved for running and I am not willing to give up my running time.

Have you ever done Zumba? What did you think of it?

Hung for the Holidays

When Carlyn from Just Keep Sweating decided to host an ornament swap I jumped at the chance! Who doesn’t like to get a new ornament to display on the Christmas tree AND get the opportunity to pick out an ornament for another person?!

My elf for the Hung for the Holidays ornament swap was Kasandra from UrbanInSuburbia and she sent me this ornament!

IMAG0682

There are lots of things that I love about this ornament! I love that it is running related and most especially that is says 13.1 on it as that is the farthest distance I have run! I also love that there is pink on it as it is one of my favorite colors! And most of all I love that Kasandra took the time to get to know me and select an ornament that she thought would be perfect for me. Thanks Kasandra!

I got to play elf for Kelly from Cupcake Kelly’s! I was super excited to be her elf because I read her blog on a regular basis and converse with her through social media. So she is a friend that I have just never met in real life. I know that Kelly liked her ornament since she already told me that she does but I can’t wait to read her blog post about it!

Did you participate in an ornament swap or some other type of swap for the holidays? If so, how did it go?

The Facebook 300 Challenge

My blog’s Facebook page is getting ever so close to having 200 likes!!! I am flattered to have that many people willing to be subjected to my random thoughts and blog posts. ;)

As excited as I am about hitting the big 200, I am naturally thinking about how awesome it would be to hit 300! It’s no secret that I love a challenge and am constantly striving to improve upon the here and now. And besides, 300 is a great number. I mean who could forget this epic movie…

Ok, maybe that’s not the best example. But you can see how 300 could be a pretty fierce group of people. And I want my blog’s Facebook page to be fierce!

As a side note, did you know that there is a workout called the 300 workout that is designed to make you look like you stepped off of the set of the movie? It’s true. And it’s pretty bad ass. Check it out by clicking here.

I know what some of you are thinking. When I hit the magical 300 likes, I should do the 300 workout. But let’s be real. Did you actually go LOOK at the workout? Go look and then come back.

Ok. Now that you actually looked at it, I think we both can agree that I am not quite at the 300 workout level. However, when I do hit the 300 mark on my blog’s Facebook page I will do my own 300 workout. I will do 100 push-ups, 100 crunches and 100 squats. All in one day!

So what are you waiting for? Share my page with your family and friends. The quicker I get to 300 likes, the quicker you can inflict pain happiness upon me!

Warrior Dash #2 Recap

The Warrior Dash is where it all began.

Prior to last year’s Warrior Dash, I was a mud / obstacle run virgin. Quite honestly I was scared to death of doing it. I even said “This is sooooo NOT my kind of race!” What a difference a year makes! Now I LIVE for these types of events!

The day before the Warrior Dash I woke up feeling excited and my endorphins were already pumping. I could not wait for race day! I may have even been annoyingly perky and overly happy all day. Just ask my co-workers! The morning of this year’s race was much different from the morning of my first Warrior Dash. Gone was the fear and hesitation of competing in such an event. Instead, I felt confident and prepared for the muddy obstacle filled fun ahead!

At this Warrior Dash, I met up with two bad ass girls (Brittany & Jessica) who also happen to be two of my teammates from my Tough Mudder race! Once you run a Tough Mudder with someone you are bonded for life. True story.

We are all squeaky clean in this pic! Not for long!

Both of the girls had never done a Warrior Dash before. But again, they are Tough Mudder chicks so …….

Once it was time to line up for our wave we decided it would be best to start as close to the front of the pack as possible. Last year I started in the back of my wave and it resulted in a lot of bottlenecking at obstacles. We also decided that we wanted to push ourselves just to see what we could accomplish. With that goal in mind we squeezed our way to the front of the wave and once our race began we sprinted to the first obstacle.

Obstacle #1: Barricade Breakdown - I don’t know what it is about climbing over walls and under barbed wire that does it for me but this is one of my favorite obstacles. They had this last year and there was also something just like it at the Tough Mudder.

Obstacle #2: Capsized Catamaran - I did not do this obstacle. I know, I know….but let me explain. This required you to swim to a barge, hop on the barge, go across the barge, get back off and swim to the other side. I am not a strong swimmer and we were warned very loudly that the water was over 10 feet deep and weak swimmers should not attempt the obstacle. I hate passing up an obstacle. Had this been a Tough Mudder I have no doubt in my mind that someone would have seen my hesitation and would have helped me through it one way or another. Unfortunately the camaraderie that exists in a Tough Mudder race does not exist in the Warrior Dash. I am not knocking the Warrior Dash. They are just very different races. With that in mind I knew that if I could not rely on myself to get across then I should not attempt it. It should also be noted that my time was not any better for going around the obstacle as I waited for Brittany to complete it.

Obstacle #3: Chaotic Crossover – Another repeat from last year. It is a giant cargo net laid horizontally across support beams. Fun!

Obstacle #4: Hard Rain - Sounds harder than it was. Basically it was an elevated platform that you had to climb up while water was being forced upon you. Force may be too strong of a word. That water wasn’t very forceful more like refreshing. At the top of the platform you had to turn around and lower yourself down.

Obstacle #5: Mud Mound – Another newbie! You had to climb up and over huge mounds of mud / dirt that were a tad slippery.

Obstacle #6: Road Rage- An oldie but a goodie. It was like running in a junkyard. Over cars and tires. I was surprised by the number of people who were going AROUND this obstacle. I know it sounds hypocritical, but really…why would you go around this?

Obstacle #7: Great Warrior Wall – I redeemed myself this year on this obstacle. Last year I panicked at the top of it but this year I climbed up and over like a pro. That’s not to say that my fear of heights is cured. I just know I can do it now.

Obstacle #8: Mortimer’s Crossing – Another new one! You had to make your way across a rope bridge. It wasn’t high off the ground at all, so it was easy.

Obstacle #9: The Trenches – This was big trenches in the ground with large logs on top. This was a pretty quick obstacle to get through.

Obstacle #10: Storming Normandy – This was barbed wire that was low to the ground that you had to army crawl through. Hard on the knees but fun.

Obstacle #11: Cargo Climb – Same as last year but it’s definitely one that should stay around. By the time I got to this obstacle my arms were feeling the effects of being abused in ways they aren’t normally. I need to work on my upper body strength. I also still had trouble with turning around at the top of it so I could come down the other side. My height does not work in my favor when it comes to that.

Obstacle #12: Warrior Roast – It wouldn’t be a Warrior Dash without fire jumping. What’s not to love about it!

Obstacle #13: Muddy Mayhem - The very last obstacle is the muddiest of all! One last army crawl under barbed wire in a big pit of mud.

Crossing the finish line! Muddy and happy!

When I crossed the finish line I glanced up at the clock to see how we fared. The clock said 43 minutes and some change. If memory serves correctly it was 43:45. I was pretty pumped about that! Unfortunately, for whatever reason my time and Brittany’s time is not listed on the Warrior Dash results page. :( I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised about this considering my time last year was listed in the wrong age group – by 60 years!!! But I am still bummed that this year’s was not listed because I would have actually placed 17th or higher in my age group depending on exactly how many second I was over 43 minutes. I don’t normally place that high and I would just like to have it officially recorded somewhere so I can say “Hey, look what I did!!!” I’ll get over it…eventually.

My new bling!

I had a super fun time at the Warrior Dash and you better believe that I will be back for more next year!

And in a few years, perhaps my future Warrior will do one with me!
