More Vegas Revelations!

The Rock ‘ n’ Roll Half Marathon may have been the primary reason I went to Vegas, but I certainly did a lot more than run 13.1 miles while I was there!
The day before the race, we arrived in Vegas around 9am. Luckily we were able to check into our room at the Encore as soon as we arrived. Since I work for Marriott, I will admit to being a little bit of a hotel snob. I am pretty particular about the hotels I stay at and I have no tolerance for poor service. However, The Encore certainly did not disappoint! The hotel was beautiful! The employees were friendly and personable. Our room was amazing and had lots of bells and whistles for me to play with. Our room had it’s own doorbell and digital display that we could change from “Do not disturb” to “Please make up room.” On the nightstand next to the bed was a control panel that allowed me to remotely open the drapes and turn on / off various lights throughout the room. We had a fax machine, a radio with an Ipod docking station, plush bath robes and much more!

My key even had my name on it!

Yep, I took this home with me!

Later in the day we went to box office at the Wynn to pick up our tickets to the Garth Brooks concert!

Look its me and Garth!!! And my tickets!!!

I may have also purchased a few Garth Brooks souvenirs while I was there too. You know, just the necessities. A key chain, a shirt & CD / DVD combo. :)

We also spent a lot of time walking up and down the strip. I learned two valuable lessons from all the walking. 1) My boots are cute and comfy for a short time but cute and not comfy after a couple miles. (Hence the blisters on my feet on the day of the race.) 2)  I can not navigate my way OUT of a casino. At one point we ended up in an alley behind the casino that was for employees only. No one said a word to us and it ended up being a great short cut. Although, a tad scary in the dark.

Later in the day I finally went to the Garth Brooks concert! In case you need a reminder about why Garth means so much to me click here. Even at the concert we managed to take a wrong turn and ended up in a private area. Don’t ask . . .and no we were not intoxicated. However, I had only had about 3 hours of sleep, so that is going to be my excuse. But I digress, back to Garth.  Did I mention that I was in the second row?!?!?!

That's Garth's guitar behind me!!!!

The Garth concert was amazing and I would highly recommend that if you ever have the chance to see his show, you should! It wasn’t a typical Garth concert at a huge venue with the band and lights. It was an intimate setting with just Garth and his guitar. He sang songs from various artists that influenced him from his childhood through his adult years. He also shared a lot of stories about his family and how music was an integral part of his life. It was an amazing experience!

Trisha Yearwood (a great country singer & his wife) also came on stage and sang a few songs! I smiled a lot, laughed a lot and cried a little. It certainly will be a concert that I will never forgot, for many reasons.

After the Garth concert we headed to one of the pre-parties for the race, but since the line was so long to get in, we ended up at Coyote Ugly instead. We have been there a few times and it never disappoints. I also may or may not have danced on the bar there . . . We will just leave that question unanswered. ;)

Finally, after Coyote Ugly we called it a night. I wish I could say I slept great and woke up refreshed the next day for my race, but my body was completely confused from jumping time zones and I was excited / nervous for the race, so I only slept for a couple of hours.

We spent all of Sunday leading up to the race relaxing and mentally preparing for the race. Thankfully I also took a short nap, which helped energize me. In case you missed how my first half marathon went, click here to find out. Our orignal after race plan was to go to the after party at XS at The Wynn. I even had an awesome dress just for the event!

I love this dress!!!

But instead, I was so sick, I went straight to bed and slept until the alarm went off at 5:30am so we could pack and head to the airport for our flight home. I am still very bummed I didn’t get to go to the party and even more bummed I didn’t get to wear the dress.

Despite all of the ups and downs that occurred during my trip to Vegas, I really had a great time. The highlight of the trip was definitely the Garth Brooks concert and the race! There may also have been a few other things that occurred in Vegas that I have not told you about, however I took the oath on the plane and I am not a liberty to tell you about those. ;)

What happens in Vegas . . . Stays in Vegas!!! ;)

A big thanks to both Mike & Jenny for tagging me in this award. I really appreciate it!

Receiving this award means that I have to share seven random things about myself with you. However, if you follow my blog, then you probably realize I have received an award like this a time or two before. See here and here. So without further ado here are seven random things about me and Las Vegas!

1. My hubby and I got married in Vegas! And no we didn’t elope. It was a well planned destination wedding. We had a few of our closest family and friends with us and then we honeymooned in Vegas for a week!

My favorite photo collage of our wedding in Vegas!

2. This was the castle I got married in! Every girl should get married in a castle. It was a dream come true!

Excalibur Hotel & Casino

3. I may or may not have danced on the bar at Coyote Ugly on my wedding night. I will leaving you guessing about that one . . . ;)

4. This is the hotel that the hubby and I will be staying at when we go to Vegas next weekend! (If you didn’t already know, I work in a hotel so seeing other hotels makes me all excited!)

6. I am not a gambler. I might put a few bucks into a slot machine but that’s about it! I have way too many items on my running wish list that I would prefer to buy than waste my money in the casino.

7. While I am in Vegas, I am hoping to meet lots of people in person that I have only met through various social media outlets. I can’t wait!!!

Hope you enjoyed the Vegas edition of seven random things about me! Have you been to Vegas? Tell me about it your favorite thing to do while you are there. Never been to Vegas? Tell me why you want to or don’t want to go there!

Vegas And My Three Outfit Opportunities

As I get closer and closer to the Las Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, I keep asking myself this very deep question: What am I going to wear? Okay, so it’s not that deep, but it is important!!!

My first priority is figuring out what to wear for the half marathon itself. I have to take into account that it is my first half, so the outfit should be memorable. It is in Vegas, so the outfit needs to be flashy. And the temperature for the race could vary from low 40s to mid 60s, so I want to be comfortable. Here is what I am thinking so far.

I am going to start with my shoes, since I have been running in them throughout the training.

These shoes were made for running!

And since the shoes have purple on them, I thought I would get these socks.

I already have a pair of these socks in blue and they are great!

Next I was thinking about getting this glittery purple skirt! Yes, I said a skirt!

Is it just me, or does this skirt scream Vegas to you??? I would wear it over a pair of form fitting black running shorts or running tights, depending on the weather. (I will bring both with me, just to be safe.)

For some reason I am drawing a blank on what to wear on the upper half of my body. I need suggestions to complete my running outfit!

The second outfit of concern is for the Garth Brooks concert. I am thinking a nice pair of jeans, a cute top and a pair of boots. Is that dressy enough? Keep in mind that it is GARTH BROOKS!!! And it is in Vegas at the Wynn.

The last outfit that I need to figure out is for the party after the half marathon. You know, because running 13.1 miles isn’t enough action for me in one day! I am hoping my legs will hold up and let me get my dance on in these shoes!

Black platform open toed shoes - need I say more?

Now I need to find a fun and flashy dress to go with the shoes! None of the dresses in my closet say Vegas to me.

All right girls (and guys), give me some input! I have three outfit opportunities that need your immediate attention! ;)

Friends in Low Places

Image from wynnlasvegas.com

Turns out I have friends in low places AND high places! But before I can tell you why, you need to read my previous blog post called ‘My Plea to Garth Brooks’ by clicking here. Go ahead, I will wait for you to come back. No really, read it now!

Okay, now that you have read that post, I should tell you that I tweeted that post to the Wynn (the resort in Vegas that is home to Garth’s show), 99.5 WYCD (my local country radio station) and to Trisha Yearwood (Garth’s wife). I also printed a copy of my post and mailed it to Garth’s fan mail address. That wasn’t over doing it was it? Nah, I didn’t think so either! Obviously, I have no way of knowing if Garth or anyone close to Garth actually read my post, but I can tell you this, somehow, someway, the universe worked its magic for me.

On Tuesday night, I got THE email I had been waiting for. It was an email from the Wynn with the subject line of ‘Purchase your tickets first – Garth Brooks pre-sale starts tomorrow.’ When I saw that on my phone, I knew opening it would either result in utter disappointment or sheer excitement. Oddly enough, I couldn’t bring myself to open the email. Instead, I was jumping up and down in my kitchen yelling, “I got the email, I got the email, I got the email!!!” The hubby came running over and snatched my phone from me while saying, “The Tough Mudder emailed you back?” (That is another email I am waiting for, but it is completely unrelated to this post.) “It’s Garth, It’s Garth!!!” I exclaimed still jumping up and down. Then just like in the movies, the scene played out in slow motion as the hubby placed his finger on the screen of my phone to open the email and a wide grin spread across his face. And in that instant, I KNEW! I knew Garth was having a concert on December 3rd. I grabbed my phone back from the hubby just to see it for myself and sure enough, it stated that Garth’s ONLY concert dates in December were the 2nd & 3rd at 7:30pm and 10:30 pm each day. I screamed. Again. I am certain that my scream was heard around the world (yep, that was me) and  I jumped up and down. Again. And finally my eyes welled up with tears. My dream was coming true!

On Wednesday I ended up getting two tickets to see Garth on December 3rd for the 7:30pm show. Second row center, by the way! :) (Thankfully I had double checked the ticketmaster website and the pre-sale was listed as starting at 9am pst, not 10am pst as the email had stated. But I am not going to dwell on that.) As you can imagine, I am super excited about the great tickets I got and even more excited that I am getting to see Garth in Vegas. I have already started counting down the days. (58 in case you were wondering.) Now I just have to figure out what I am going to wear. . .

What concert would you love to go see and why?

My Plea to Garth Brooks

I enjoy all genre’s of music, but I LOVE country music. Country music has been a part of my life ever since I was a kid. I remember staying overnight at my grandparent’s house and waking up in the morning to the sound of country music playing on their radio. I would just lie in bed and listen to the music, it made me feel overwhelmingly content.

My dad was probably the biggest country music fan I have ever met. And an even bigger Garth Brooks fan. He had every Garth Brooks tape that was ever released (yes, it was tapes back then, not CD’s). Because of him I know the words to every single Garth Brooks song! Unfortunately, my dad passed away when I was 13 years old, he was 32 and died unexpectedly of a heart attack. As the years went by after my dad’s passing, I drifted away from country music and instead favored pop music from groups like New Kids on the Block, just like my friend’s did. But I never drifted away from Garth Brooks. I am a true believer in the power of music, a specific song or artist can take you back to a special time in your life. At any point, I could pop in a Garth Brooks tape and instantly my dad was with me again. Even 19 years later, Garth can still take me back to a simpler and more carefree time in my life.

My favorite picture of my Dad and me!

Unfortunately, my dad never had the opportunity to see Garth in concert. If he did, I know that he would have been beside himself with excitement as just watching videos of Garth performing live got him fired up. Once Garth retired from touring, I thought that I would never get to see him perform live either. However, I had my first opportunity to see Garth in 2007 when he was performing a week-long series of concerts. Despite the intense urge I had to see Garth in concert, I was very pregnant with Brennen at the time and I had endured a pregnancy full of complications. Traveling to the concert was out of the question for me and I was truly bummed. I figured I would probably never get the chance to see Garth again. However, in December of 2010, I finally got to see Garth live. He was in Nashville playing a series of concerts to benefit the flood victims. It was a dream come true for me. And as corny as it  sounds, it was everything I had imagined and more. I cried many times that night. Some tears were out of joy and some were out of sadness for my dad. My tears were especially heavy when Garth played, ‘The Dance,’ the song that without hesitation brings my relationship with my dad to life.  At the end of the concert, I did not want to leave. For those few hours I became a little girl listening to Garth Brooks with my dad and all was right with the world. It was a magical experience that I will never forget.

If you are a Garth Brooks fan you know that he has a one man show in Vegas at the Wynn. If you follow my blog, you know that I will be in Vegas in December to run my first half marathon in the Rock ‘n Roll series of races. I have been anxiously waiting for Garth to announce his concert dates for December. Currently they have only been announced through November. To say that I would like to see him again is an understatement. I am hoping that the universe will align for me and Garth will announce a concert for 12/3/11. It’s not like I can just go to Vegas on a separate occasion to see him. Between making arrangements for someone to watch Brennen, securing the time off of work and allotting money for all the expenses - one trip is all we can manage. However, I can guarantee that if my dad has any pull, he will see to it that I see Garth in Vegas.

On the off-chance that Garth is reading this, or someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows Garth is reading this . . .Please, please, please have a concert on December 3rd. It would truly mean the world to me!

Goin’ Coastal in Detroit

If you read my post about going to the Selfridge Air Show, you may be wondering what other activities we had planned that caused us to leave the air show so early. Brennen had a friend’s birthday party to attend and a sleepover at another friend’s house. The hubby and I had tickets to the Goin’ Coastal concert featuring Kenny Chesney, Zac Brown Band, Billy Currington & Uncle Kracker at Ford Field in Detroit. We are huge country music fans!

Thanks to a friend who took Brennen to the birthday party and then later dropped him off for the sleepover, the hubby and I were able to go 99.5 WYCD’s Beach Bash just outside of Ford Field. Here is what it looked like when we got downtown.

You better believe that there are TONS of country music fans in Detroit! The hubby even decided that he wanted to look the part and bought his first cowboy hat!

My Cowboy ;)

We also checked out an up and coming country band from Detroit (Yep, I said Detroit!) called AnnaBelle Road, who was playing on the 99.5 WYCD Beach Bash stage. The hubby and I both LOVED them. The band had great stage presence and chemistry. The lead singer had an amazing voice and the fiddler player was unbelievable. Annabelle Road sang a few of their own songs, like ‘What Goodbye Looks Like’ and popular songs by other artists, like ‘Sweet Home Alabama’. The band also led a giant line dance to prove to the world that Detroit loves country music just as much as any other place. The hubby and I were happy participants. We have yet to see the video on You Tube so, I don’t think we are going to be stars anytime soon. Bummer! The hubby and I are hooked on Annabelle Road and plan on following them as they grow (we are hoping to catch them at Arts, Beats & Eats) and I guarantee they will be well-known in country music land in no time!

Once we entered Ford Field for the concert I was taken aback by how beautiful the stadium was. I was almost ashamed to call myself a Detroiter since I had not stepped foot into Ford Field till this past weekend. It was very modern and clean. Even more shocking was the high level of service that we received from every employee that we encountered. They were all very friendly, polite and helpful. The beer vendor in our section was especially memorable! He was dancing and singing along with the crowd. You could tell that he loved his job! Kudos to the entire Ford Field staff and especially to those responsible for the training of the employees! Job well done!

As far as the concert goes, I really could go on and on about how fabulous it was. Afterall, I have rated it the 2nd best concert I have ever been too (Sorry, Kenny, nobody will ever top Garth Brooks) and at 6 hours long it was the longest concert I have ever been to. However, I will try to keep my recap concise and just go over the highlights of the show. Uncle Kracker was the first to come on stage and he wowed the crowd with many of his favorites. He also played Kid Rock’s ‘All Summer Long’, one of my favorite songs that reminds me about summertime in northern Michigan. And no, Kid Rock did not join him on stage. Next up was Billy Currington. I was surprised that I knew so many of his songs as he was the artist that I felt like I was the least familiar with. My hubby’s favorite song of his is, ‘I’m pretty good at drinking beer,’ of course!. He also played Hank Williams Jr’s song ‘Family Tradition’ which got the crowd pretty fired up. The next act to come on stage is one of my favorite country bands, the Zac Brown Band! They played many of their own songs, including my favorite, ‘Chicken Fried.’ They also sang ‘America the Beautiful’ and then got everyone in Ford Field stomping their feet to the ’The Devil Went Down to Georgia’ by The Charlie Daniels Band. I honestly didn’t think I could like the Zac Brown Band anymore than I already did, but I was wrong. The lead singer addressed the crowd and thanked everyone for spending their hard-earned money on tickets to the concert. The message of thanks resonated with every person in that stadium whether they were a Detroiter or not, but I felt it was an important thing to say to a city with such a bad economy. I am sure you can imagine who came on stage after Zac Brown Band. . . . Kenny Chesney!!! What’s not to love about him?!?! He is a great performer, a wonderful singer and genuine good guy. He surprised the crowd by soaring onto stage via a zipline type apparatus from the other side of the stadium, high above the crowd. He sang all of my favorite songs, including his new hit that I can’t get enough of, ‘You and Tequila.’ He had a great rapport with the crowd as he encouraged everyone to sing along and told lots of stories in between most of his songs. The message that stuck with me the most came before he sang ‘The Boys of Fall.’ He stressed the importance of kids being involved in sports or other extra-curricular activities to keep them on the straight and narrow. I could not agree more. At the end of playing ‘The Boys of Fall,’ Desmond Howard came on stage and the crowd went nuts. I had no idea who Desmond Howard was or why everyone went crazy for him. After being educate by the hubby, I learned that Desmond Howard played football at the University of Michigan and won the Heisman Trophy in 1991. It was a fitting way to end the song and Kenny scores extra points with me for selecting a Michigan athlete to come on stage! Although the concert was the longest one I had ever been to, it flew by! Like most concerts, this one also had an encore. However, unlike most concerts, the encore lasted for another 45 minutes – 1 hour. I feel bad for the poor saps who left when they “thought” the concert was over. Here’s a tip, never leave at what you think is the end of a concert, there is almost always an encore. During the encore Kenny sang various songs with each opening act individually and at the very end of the concert they all came on stage together. There are no words to describe how I felt at the end of the night! It was an awesome concert!

Who wears the hat better? You be the judge . . .;)

There are tons of other things I could discuss here, like the older ladies near our section who were wearing red cowgirl hats who seemed to have an unending line of young guys giving them attention or the artist by the name of Sonia Leigh who joined Zac Brown Band on stage to sing one of her songs with a beautiful voice that was marred by her bieber like haircut that I just couldn’t get past. Or the fact that I still can’t shake a habit from my younger years of stopping at Taco Bell after a night of adult beverages. But some things will just have to be left unsaid . . .

Have you been to Goin’ Coastal? If so, how was your experience? If you are not a country music fan, what is your most favorite concert that you have ever attended?

New Year’s Resolutions Revisited

Wow, I can’t believe that the year is more than half way over! Where did the time go? Passing the halfway point for 2011 has me wondering how I have been doing on my New Year’s Resolutions. I’m guessing not good since I can’t even remember them. But I am going to pull out my list and see how I have done.

Drum roll please . . .

My 2011 New Year’s Resolutions

1. Complete four races. – So far I have done the Rock CF 5k, The Let’s Move Festival of races 10k and The Cedar Point 5k Challenge. I am currently signed up for the Warrior Dash and the Las Vegas Rock ‘N Roll half marathon. I think it is safe to say that I will accomplish this one! Yay!

2. Do four things on my bucket list. – Crap! I better get moving on this one! I haven’t done a single thing from my bucket list this year.

3. Get a will. – I haven’t done this one yet, either. It’s depressing to think of but it is very necessary and important.

4. Attend one concert, one theatre event and one sporting event. – So far I have been to two Detroit Tigers games and one Detroit Pistons game. I have not been to a concert yet, but the hubby and I have tickets to the Kenny Chesney concert in August. I am still hopeful that when we are in Vegas in December, we will be able to see Garth Brooks too! (Garth, again if you are reading my blog, please have a concert 12/3. Please and thank you!)  I have not been to the theatre yet this year, unless you count Sesame Street Live, and I am not counting that. But I think it is safe to say I will be able to cross this off my list  pretty easily.

Overall I am pretty happy with my progress on my New Year’s Resolutions. How are you doing on your New Year’s Resolutions?

The Cedar Point 5k Challenge – In Remembrance of my Dad

A few months back, I came across some information regarding the Cedar Point 5k Challenge and my gut told me that I was meant to be part of it.

As luck would have it, I already had plans to be in Sandusky the day of the race for our family vacation. The high-light of the race is that the route actually meandered through Cedar Point! And since it was the “first-annual” race, I would belong to a select group of people who got to experience Cedar Point in a whole different way for the first time.

But the best part of the race is that it was on Father’s Day. I have struggled with determining the best way to celebrate my Dad on Father’s Day for many years (he passed away in my early teen years), but The Cedar Point 5k Challenge seemed like the perfect way to embrace his memory. My dad was very athletic (I would like to believe that I am too) and he was definitely a thrill seeker (me, not so much). So this race, for me, was not about time or finishing in the top percentage of runners. Instead, it was about honoring my dad.

The weather on race day was perfect. It was warm enough that I was able to wear a pair of running shorts and tank top but cool enough to remain comfortable throughout the duration of the run. Once the race began and I crossed into Cedar Point itself, I was struck by how quiet it was (turns out it was a blessing in disguise that I had forgotten my Ipod at home). All of the rides were in hibernation mode, the games were silent and the crowds were absent. The only sounds I heard was the music on the loud speakers and the determined footsteps of my fellow runners. I found the atmosphere to be very soothing. I settled into a comfortable pace, knowing that I had removed the pressure I typically place on myself to finish at a particular time. It was a refreshing change of pace to just relax and enjoy my surroundings. I marveled at the man-made rollercoasters and felt baffled by those who dared to ride them. I enjoyed the breeze coming off of the water and breathed in the fresh air. As I neared the end of the race, my internal Ipod played the most appropriate song, “The Dance” by Garth Brooks.

“Our lives are better left to chance. I could have missed the pain. But I’d of had to miss the dance.”

Thanks for the dance, Dad. I love you.

Vegas, Baby!

What started as a talk between my hubby and I about going to Vegas for our wedding anniversary in September, has turned into us going to Vegas in December for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon instead! Neither one of us has ever done a half marathon before. I have been toying with the idea of running one, but I knew I wanted my first one to be memorable. I first started looking into half marathon’s in the Detroit area. All of them were occurring in the early Fall, which meant I would be training in the Summer time. Heat + Many Miles = No Fun. In my reasearch I came across the Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon and I knew this was the race for us. First of all, it’s in Vegas. We wanted to go there anyways this year and we got married there. Secondly, it’s at night on the strip. That is awesome! Thirdly, it is the Rock ‘n’ Roll series of races which everyone seems to rave about. There will be entertainment every mile and an after party. Fourthly, did I mention that it is in VEGAS!!! Fifthly, it is in December, so my training will occur in the Fall. Much more feasible.

Although I am giddy with excitement, I do have to mention that I am crossing every part of my body that Garth Brooks will have a show while we are in Vegas. I would LOVE to see Garth in Vegas! So Garth, if you are reading my blog . . . Please, please, please have a show on December 3rd!!!

As a side note, the mommy part of me is already feeling guilty about being away from Brennen for almost 3 whole days. I’m just trying to ignore that mommy voice right now so I can bask in my excitement!
