A Day Fit for a Superhero

Halloween had the potential to be a disaster this year.

The weather was forecasted to be cold, rainy and windy. And despite my best efforts to find an indoor alternative to traditional trick of treating, I didn’t find anything. All of the malls had already had their trick or treating the weekend before Halloween. And the icing on the cake or perhaps the eyeball in the witches brew is that Little B’s Dad and I planned to take Little B out trick or treating together. One week after we got divorced. (Insert spooky music here.)

As you know from my Wordless Wednesday post, Little B was going as Spiderman!

Cutest Spiderman ever!

When Little B puts on the Spiderman costume a magical and fun thing happens. He truly believe he is Spiderman! And perhaps some of that innocent child like magic spilled over onto his Dad and I that night because Halloween could not have been better! His Dad and I got along, we both focused on making sure that Little B had the best time possible and Little B got to enjoy a carefree night with both of us.

This year Little B was not afraid of the scary costumes or of going up to the doors of people’s houses. In face, he was quite excited about all of it. I couldn’t even get him to stay still long enough for me to get a good pic!

That blur is Little B, I swear!

At every house we went to, Little B was very vocal about his love of the candy he received. “All right! A Reese’s! High-five! or “Sweet! This is awesome!” Thankfully he never got anything that he didn’t like so my fear of him exclaiming his dissatisfaction was unfounded. Phew!

Little B’s excitement waned pretty quickly as it was cold and drizzly outside. (We only did half of a street!) So once he had a few of his coveted Reese’s in his bucket he wanted to go home.

Showing off his loot!

At the end of the night Little B asked us for a group hug and we obliged. He was smiling from ear to ear and I headed home (Little B was at his Dad’s for the night) with a renewed sense of what life after divorce can be like for Little B. Were there parts of the night that were awkward and uncomfortable? Of course, but our superhero got to enjoy his Halloween, just like every kid should.

A Halloween to Remember

I was really excited about Halloween this year, even more so than usual! For the first time ever, Brennen actually understood the concept of Halloween. He picked out his own costume, Barney the dinosaur, of course!  He even started practicing his trick or treating technique weeks before the big day even came.

On the night of Halloween, I made our traditional Halloween dinner. Mummy dogs!

What Halloween is complete without mummy dogs for dinner?

Normally after dinner, the hubby and I would both get Brennen in his costume, have our neighbor take a family picture of us and then I would take Brennen trick or treating while the hubby passed out candy at the house. We had a different plan for this year. Since neither one of us wanted to miss out on a minute of the first Halloween that Brennen was excited about , we decided to conduct a social experiment.

I call it, “The Honor System”

Yep, it’s true we left a bowl of Halloween goodies outside our house on a table with a note explicitly saying to take only two pieces of candy. Do you think it worked? You will have to read to the rest of this blog entry to find out!

Keeping with tradition we had our family picture taken!

Isn't he the cutest Barney you have ever seen?

Then we headed out for trick or treating for the first time as a family!

Brennen got a lot of attention and treats as he is pretty darn cute! A few of our neighbors even had special treats just for him! It was so nice! Brennen was way more involved in trick or treating than in years past. He would grab his pumpkin and go up to each house with me and say, “Trick or Treat!” He was also very entertaining as at every house he had to make chit-chat with the people. Here are just a few of the things he would say.

“Oh look at that TV!!!”

“Those doggies are SO cute!”

“I like your Halloween decorations.”

“This is a green house.”

I love my little chatterbox. It’s funny how just a short time ago he was very timid, things have certainly changed!

We only took Brennen trick or treating on the street we live on, but that alone took 50 minutes!!!  Again, he was VERY chatty! After we finished our street he started to get tired and he had plenty of candy in his pumpkin. Upon returning home we checked in on our social experiment and would you believe that despite being gone for almost an hour there was still plenty of candy left?!?! It just goes to show that people will make the right decision when faced with making a decision. :)

Once back home we all indulged in some goodies and then called it a night! Trick or Treating is hard work!

Saturday Sound Off: Halloween Decorations

I am not sure if it is because I have a three year old or if it is because I have never liked anything scary, but either way I have been very aware of other people’s Halloween decorations this year. Don’t get me wrong, I love Halloween! In fact, Halloween is one of my favorite holidays! However, I prefer my Halloween to be more PG than rated R. I prefer watching It’s a Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown versus any horror movie of your choosing. I prefer little kids dressed up as their favorite cartoon character versus older kids who are dressed up to scare people. And I prefer Halloween decorations that are family friendly versus those that promote fear.

I am not saying that people shouldn’t decorate how they want to for Halloween. I am just saying they should think about the message they are sending and making sure it is the message they want to send.

There is one house in particular in my neighborhood that I feel is crossing the line with their Halloween decorations. Take a look for yourself.

Do you see what is bothering me? Look closer at the window. They have a doll stroller hanging off the window with a baby doll hanging out of it. Is that really necessary? What message does that send?

There is another part of their Halloween display that disturbs me as well, although I did not get a picture of it to show you. They have what appears to be an mini porch swing that is elevated off the ground. At night they put a baby that looks like a zombie inside it.  Again, is that necessary?

So what do you think? Do you think these people are crossing the line with their Halloween decorations or do you think I am being to sensitive. Let me know what you think!
